Kate, I wish you lived next door, I would take them off your hands. [g] I am a pansy lover. I am all about getting the longest bloom out of what I plant, so I guess I would have let them bloom until the heat slowed them down. I actually never pull pansies except in pots and only after they have set seed to either collect or release. Some of mine come back every year. You don't want to have them come back next year? You can't plant your warm season annuals without pulling the pansies?

If you are sick of looking at them, then that may be the determining factor.

Yes it is true that I can run as rampant as I like in the garden and its my choice:) Just looking for the experiences of others.

Prairiemoon: Oh I wish you were closer also. I would give them all to you! The thing about getting rid of them they are in my half barrels and a large three tiered planter in the front yard. They are very visible and once they stop blooming I don't want to look at them all summer. Boring. I suppose I might be able to transplant them into pots and when the summer blooming annuals are done put them back in the half barrels. Or then again I might just compost them.

I can't be of much help since I am one of those wimps who won't pull a plant as long as there's one green stem on it, "just in case", lol, and if they're in bloom? Well, goodness, no, I can't pull it!

That being said, that's why my annual pots and containers often look shabby at the end of the season, be it end of spring or end of autumn. I've always admired annual plantings that are seasonal, up-to-date, and in full glory - meaning the owners are not as wimpy as I am and thought nothing of yanking the waning bloomers and putting in new things.

So, if you have the guts to yank the pansies and move on to the next thing, more power to you, lol! As far as moving the pansies to pots of other locations, I think only you can decide if it's worth the effort. With pansies in particular, I've always had a hard time keeping them going. I had some gorgeous pansies one year which I desperately wanted to keep till fall and hopefully overwinter, but they didn't make it through summer. It may be easier for you just to compost them, as you say.

If I have potted ones, I have tried moving the pots to an out of the way part-shade spot for the summer. And try to get them in sun come August. But either I forget about them or they didn't make it from neglect. Now I often don't bother.

They hit the compost pile as soon as the annuals get in. I do wait on the annuals though. Usually Memorial Day weekend. I try to keep blinders on when I am at the garden centers in early-mid May.

Dee, I'm like you...can't get rid of anything blooming or with remote possibility of blooming.

I've got pansies in a round shallow container since last year. Lost a couple over winter but most came through and are blooming their little heads off.

I'll take the advice to put them out of the way in part shade until Fall.

Everybody's got to do what they like in their gardens and containers.

I'm still struggling to get Johnny Jump Up seedlings to grow. They're not going to make bloom before heat sets in but they better bloom come Fall. I've just got to remember to keep them cared for until then with all the garden hubbub over next 4-5 months...LOL.

Had a Chocolate Eupatorium whose stems kept dying from the bottom up. By the time Fall came around it was trussed up like a Thanksgiving turkey but I still couldn't toss it. Moved it to the wasteland at woods edge and it's come back this Spring. Don't know if it'll have same problem or there was something chemical in soil that adversely effected it. As long as it's got a chance I try to find a place for it in the back by the woods. Besides...no critter has eaten it and it's smack in the middle of a "deer, squirrel, rabbit & groundhog" right of way...LOL.

I bought 'Snow Angel' pansies in the fall and with all the snow we had and the cold, they wintered over, just like a perennial. That is easy care. No sowing, no planting. They just started greening up in early April and now they are full of flowers. They are in a bed where their decline will not be noticed once it gets going.

I've tried to keep pansies over the summer and resurrect them in the fall and no go. I think they bloom their little hearts out and they are toast by August. I just buy more in the Fall. Those that are in the ground, hopefully will reseed, but I'm really hoping to collect seed from the 'Snow Angels' this year and sow them in August to put seedlings into the garden for next spring.
