Todays Rose Haul- Milk Carton Roses

Well, its that time of year again. This is the third year I am posting about what roses I found locally each spring. I usually have one about Milk Carton Roses too but this year they are combined in one post.

Went shopping today. Was very proud of myself when at my first stop which was Home Depot I completely ignorned the bagged roses of which they had rows and rows. Instead I bought my Peat Moss, Shepards Hooks, Panseys, bird seed, an elephant ear tuber and some hardware I needed and left.

Next stop Hicks, I great local nursery were I bought about 20 of the J&P Milk Carton Roses last year. I was very dissapointed to see that they had only about 1/3 as many Milk Carton Roses as they carried last year. I was talking to a lady who worked there (who just happened to have a roses garden too) and she said they decided not to carry as many this year as last spring. I think its because of all the freeze damage on many of the early roses last year and I remember they had lots of dead and dying ones in the Milk Cartons and I am sure that caused problems. Last year I had to really, really pick thru them for the good ones and some roses I never got that year because none came up to my standards. Even so, I found that last year was the first time ever that I lost ANY Milk Carton Roses, so I should have been even more selective.

No matter now, this years crop are nice and healthy good quality. I bought six roses. I got FRANKLY SCARLETT a new J&P red Floribuna that I have seen in their catalog. I bought another BLACK MAGIC HT as I have one and wanted another last year but never got one. I bought LOVERS LANE, a gorgeous red with white reverse HT as I bought one of them last year and it died on me so this is a replacement. I bought DISNEYLAND as it was on my wish list since last year. I bought a CAREFREE DELIGHT. I have one I bought four years ago now, the first rose I got when I started my rose obsession and I just love this shrub rose. Been wanting another one so now I will have two. The sixth rose is a Floribunda impuse buy. I wanted to get a PASSIONATE KISSES as I bought one last year but it was one of the ones that died. So I saw HONEY BOUQUET. Its I kind of really pale, pale yellow I think, not sure. Supposed to have a great strong scent.

HONEY BOUQUET and FRANKLY SCARLETT are both own root. The CAREFREE DELIGHT does not look grafted but it does not have the New Generation logo on it for own roots. I guess you can't go by that. My old one is grafted but the graft is burried like all my roses.

Got some seeds I needed and my Rose Tone and off I went to my next stop, another well known local nursery. Unfortunately they had very few roses there so I mostly got my bagged manure and bagged compost so I can plant these I bought. They did however have TRAVIATA, another on my wish list for quite a while so you know I bought it. Was not a Milk Carton but rather a paper pot but its pretty much the same idea, just different growers. This one is a Star Roses. You should see the big thick gorgeous canes on the graft. I am sure its going to go great for me.

I found a few of the JP milk carton roses when I went to visit my in-laws over easter. Unfortunately, they had been out in the cold too long and all of them had damaged canes. They didn't have anything very interesting anyway. Around Madison, only Jungs has bagged roses but the quality varied a lot on them, some were huge and beautiful, others were very runty. Well, Menards had some body bag roses stacked in a big box but I know better than to dig through a box of roses looking for the ones I want. That's a sure way to lose an arm. So anyway, what I'm trying to say is even with less selection you still have more choices than I do.

When I was at Menards a couple of weeks ago, they have 3 huge deep boxes of bagged roses. I asked the garden help why they don't unpack and display the roses so people can find what they want, and it would also help get them sold. They just looked at me funny. I was back there again on Sunday and it didn't look like a single bag had been sold. What a waste just because they're too lazy to unpack and display properly.

I put in a Legends rose this year and I love it. My bushes first bloom was a good 8 1/2" across, deep dark red, and nicely fragrant which was a nice surprise to me. The bloom didn't last quite as long as I wished, but hopefully that will improve as the rose matures somewhat. I was initially worried that there was only one single bud for quite a while, but now I see that there are about 6 or 7 more now and they all appear to be very large as well. Also, the stems are nice and long and plenty strong enough to support the huge blooms with no problem at all. Many large blooming roses hang their heads because the stems aren't strong enough to support them and I don't like that. John

Sammy, I'll keep an eye out on Basye's Blueberry, since yours have gotten rather large :') This is the second time I've grown Basye's Blueberry, and although I like it a lot, it's not as blackspot-resistant as my Carefree Beauty was or as resistant as my chinas & teas. It's very worthy of growing in my garden though due to its excellent fragrance & zero thorns. By the way, the only reason I removed Carefree Beauty years ago was because it got way to large for the space where I planted it. Great rose though. Regarding Reine des Violettes, in my opinion, it is of a different character than the other hybrid perpetuals I have grown. It does not have the really large "heavy blooms" that many of the other hybrid perpetuals do. For example, it's nothing at all like 'Paul Neyron'. Reine des Violettes' blooms are medium-sized and although they have lots of petals, the bloom depth is shallow like a gallica rose, with a perfect button-eye like some of the old European roses have. And unlike most hybrid perpetuals, Reine des Violettes does not make a good cutting rose at all, because the petals fall cleanly to the ground after about two days max on the bush. The major attraction of this rose to me are the gallica-like form, the button-eye, the consistant fragrance, the arching canes that make it usable as a "short" climber, it is full yet NEVER balls on me, & mine has never had a single thorn on it. Although it blooms more than many hybrid perpetuals, it in no way compares to the frequency of a china, tea, or shrub rose. I get a heavy flush or two in the spring, sporadic blooms all throughout summer, and very, very few blooms in the fall. I completely love it, but I also recognize it's not for everyone. Interesting to hear what the big box stores around the country sell. I suppose it's up to the individual manager's to pick what heuch's they stock? In OKC Lowes started with 2 gallon pots of Peach Crisp and Fire Chief. Although I did find a Georgia Peach marked as a Peach Crisp and snatched it up. They also carried 2 gallon pots with three more common heuchs such as Southern Comfort, Palace Purple and a green one who's name I forget. All 2 gallons were $14.98. Now Lowes has 1 gallon heuchs for $9.98. In the Carnival series, Watermelon, Cocomint and Coffee Bean. They also have Golden Zebra. Home Depot carries one gallon Heuch from one nursery for $6.98 and another for $9.98. This past week the $6.98 Heuchs were one sale with other perrenials for $3.33 each. Different stores had different selections. Picked up Obsidian, Firefly, Carnival Watermelon and Plum Pudding. The Plum Pudding look exactly like the palace Purple I have only taller. Anyone think they are similar or did I get mismarked plants? They are really dark purple and there's no veining.

The Rose Silks are more of a 'Dusty Rose'. Some are VERY 'Silky' - so I can see how they earned the name 'Rose Silk'. The Chocolates are a darker Color and do fit Cat's description. I had my first bloom this week of the >'SunSmile Brown', however, I didn't watch the bloom throughout the day. The bloom was under 2" - But, this was the first bloom, so that is all I have to go by. Variegated Leaves and looked just like a miniature Chocolate Silk. I must be totally spoiled as I am used to the fabulous selection they have had around here in the boxed roses for the past few years.

This year there is one less source for them as I used to get lots of plants at our local Agway, which closed up last year. I really miss it. You might guess that I bought some of my boxed roses there in past years.

Good for you! Sounds like you had a pretty successful day.
One to be on the look out for is Honey Perfume. It has done great for me. It is now in it's 4th year and I love it. Beautiful and smelly!

I keep seeing that rose and it keeps calling out to me. The look of it, the color and the name just say "Buy me, I'm luscious."

Rita, I did some more 'nursery hopping' yesterday, and ended up with yet another J&P milk carton rose, 'America', to be exact. Last week I bought 'Lovestruck', a new Floribunda, which I just had to have.

But now I'm going to say it out loud: I AM DONE. No more roses - at least not this year.

Ah, ha. The no more roses for this year usually does not last :-))

I am still not done with the Florabunda section and will keep working on it. Like everything else in the garden, it is a work in progress but it really does look great this spring.

I was really itching to plant my new roses yesterday but I had daylilies to move that I had not gotten to so I promised myself I would be smart and do that first as it was more important. More important because they had already started growing. So I moved daylilies yesterday. Not finished, still have afew more to do. But today is cold and rainey so no gardening for me. I don't know if this rain will even clear out by Saturday so it looks like the next garden day is Sunday. Will have to go back to the moving daylilies project but I know I will just have to plant at least one of those seven roses.

After the moving of the daylilies I should be working on the roses I figgure by Monday.

Couldn't stand it. Put off doing anything else and started on my new roses. I got 5 of the 7 planted. Still to get planted are BLACK MAGIC and FRANKLY SCARLETT.

It gets harder to plant every year because I am working in spots with lots of roses around me and there is not as much room to move around as I would like.

One thing I did notice is how nice and rich the soil is in my rose gardens. The soil really was just okay in the side yard garden by the house and it was truelly lousey soil in the front yard were Florabundaville is now. All that good compost spread on top and all the peat and bagged manure I put in each planting hole when I dig must really have paid off. Of course all is topped off my lots of mulch and the earthworms just love it in there.

Hurray. The Milk Carton Roses are done. Now, unless I buy some potted roses locally when they come in (trying to resist) all I will have to plant are my Heirloom Roses order when they come in. But they are so small, they are really easy to plant.

Just finished with the last, BLACK MAGIC, today.
