Am not too sure about this but I presume Rose Silk and Chocolate Silk are the same thing. Those with the white edges get deemed picotee. Am thinking because there are different shades of this flower people and seed companies start giving it their own name. The color does resemble a warm cup of chocolate milk. I prefer calling it chocolate for the warm fuzzies.

I have not grown any Rose/Chocolate Silk with variegated leaves...but I think Emma might have.

The Japanese variety is called "Sun Smile Brown" and it has white edges. The other Japanese 'chocolate' color I've grown is "Chachamaru" - which although has been sold on eBay as being "orange" is not even close to being orange! It can best be described as the equivalent of a chocolate Mt Fuji. There are photos of that on my member page.

Hi Cat, thanks for the info. You just reminded me, and I went to check my seed stash. I did find a packet from Emma 'Rose Silk, picotee edge, variegated leaves'! Go figure why I didn't plant that packet instead of buying off ebay and getting something without that leaves. :-)

So based on this, I am going to presume that there are at least 3 kinds in this list:
- Rose Silk with white edge and variegated leaves
- Chocolate Silk/Milk Chocolate/Chocolate Picotee with white edge and non-variegated leaves
- Chocolate without white edge and don't know variegated or non-variegated kind of leaves

Have you ever grown a Chocolate Silk/Rose Silk that turned out to have no picotee/white edge ?

Did plant the Chachamaru I got from you some time back and they are indeed blooming brown with 5 white spokes, like a Mt Fuji but slightly smaller and without variegated leaves. And yes, I was also abit confused when they bloomed that color, as I have seen it being called orange on ebay. Thought I did something wrong (grown the plants in too much shade, or with soil that are too poor), but Emma set me straight on that and sent me some photos of other JMG lovers to compare.

Thank you for the info about Sun Smile Brown. That is a dwarf with variegated leaves, right ? How big is the flower ? And do they stay open the whole day ?

This is what "I" have grown:

>Rose Silk with Slight Picotee Edge Leaves NOT Variegated
>Rose Silk TIE DIE [Cross] NO PICOTEE Variegated Leaves
Today I got another 'New' Cross that is a
>VERY PALE Dusty Rose Silk NO PICOTEE Variegated Leaves [I 'think' - need to check out the leaves again]
All of the above are 3" - 4" Blooms. The Rose Silks are more of a 'Dusty Rose'. Some are VERY 'Silky' - so I can see how they earned the name 'Rose Silk'.
The Chocolates are a darker Color and do fit Cat's description.
I had my first bloom this week of the
>'SunSmile Brown',
however, I didn't watch the bloom throughout the day. The bloom was under 2" - But, this was the first bloom, so that is all I have to go by. Variegated Leaves and looked just like a miniature Chocolate Silk.

I have also gotten CROSSES from my Rose Silks that had 5" -6" Blooms.

I remember she sent me several varieties...and she also had gotten some huge blooms from some too! I sent about 3/4 of the seeds she gave me to friends overseas. Still have a few left but need to make room to plant them!!! The temperature is always over 100 degrees now with a heat index getting up to 115 or so. I think I will have to wait for a fall planting.

Yes, the Sun Smile Brown is as Emma described it.
