Japanese Lilac Problem - HELP!

Hello...

I am wondering if anyone has any ideas about an issue I am having with my Japanese Lilac. It is about 12 ft tall and fairly mature (I think). It looked great until about a week ago. We went through a fairly dry and hot period and then suddenly one day I noticed wilted curling leaves with brown spots on them. The brown spots and wilting are not in one specific area of the tree and some have begun falling off. The spots themselves on the leaves vary in size and are a dull to medium brown (see pics). There are some instances of dead twigs throughout as well. Very little though. The flowers still look great and are just starting to whiten. I am not sure if this is a yearly occurence since we just moved into this house in the fall after the leaves had fallen but it looked great just a few weeks ago. Does anyone have any idea of what this problem could be and how to fix it. It is such a beautiful tree and I would hate to lose this one. It is about 10 ft away from a maple that is very healthy by all appearances.

The other vine (there are two main vines, not sure if they are separate plants, or one plant that is joined under the soil?) seems to be doing well, will the yellow (dying?) vine affect the healthier one in any way? I was unsure when to harvest the cucumbers. All the sources I could find went purely by measurements, and these two seemed to be a bit young yet while they had their nice green color, so I tried to let them go a bit longer. I did harvest the two that are in the image today and tried the greener of the two, and it was a tad too bitter. I also harvested a third from the other vine as it is a nice shade of green and slightly bigger than the other two, which I will try with dinner tonight. I appreciate the feedback. I'm still in trial and error mode in my first year of attempting a garden.

They're both really nice flowering trees and you're lucky that the city will put either one in! There is a Flowering Crab called 'Spring Snow' that doesn't produce fruit - is that the one they are interested in? There is one big problem with that cultivar: it's quite susceptable to a fungus called apple scab. I know the fungus exists in Ontario, but I don't know if it's common or not. The Japanese Lilac is pretty disease resistant as far as lilacs go. The mildew that can be a pest for the common lilac isn't as much of a problem for the Japanese one. It's also got a nice tall vase form that might be a better shape if it's going next to a sidewalk or street. My personal preference is for the flowering crab, but I think the lilac might be more practical. Either would look beautiful though if/when it's a healthy mature tree. BP

If the tree gets full sun, it could be scorched from high heat/baking sun, which will cause that browning and curling at the edges. Though some of the pictures look like somebody might be chewing this guy up. Have you noticed any bugs? Any dead wood in the center of the tree? Does one side look worse than the other? And where are you located? Sorry....lots of questions!

Japanese Treelilacs bloom on old wood. The pruning suggestion (don't prune) would be my first recommendation. Is it in the lawn that you fertilize with nitrogen diligently? Do you fertilize it diligently? Another don't do, IMO. A couple fertilizings of the lawn shouldn't hurt, but no need to feed the tree. If it is still growing fast (1.5-2ft/yr), it certainly doesn't need any help growing. More fertilizer helps keep it in the vegetative mode, not the flowering mode. If you've been watering, it's way time to stop that too. A little drought now and then will help it flower too. It's too late to do anything drastic, flower buds for next year have already formed, if they were going to. Save the root pruning for spring 2009, about the time that regular lilacs finish blooming. If it works, you will get blooms in 2010.
