any borderline zone 5/6 grow Safrano?????

I keep vacillating back and forth about Safrano. I just love the idea of a classic, very old tea rose with great scent and apricot coloration (both qualities being very hard to get in teas) but it's a zone 7b??? tea. Has anyone in a zone like mine have had success with a young own-root tea rose (NOT a baby band)growing in a zone like mine?????

The old timers in our rose club use to protect their roses with Styrofoam sheets. I think this would work if you added an electric heating system. They admitted it was awfully ugly.

There's a problem. Kansas is a lot windier and a lot closer to the Arctic winds off the Canadian Shield. Those winds make my Safranos more of a challenge.
I really doubt that Kansas could handle Teas for the long haul.

One way to know if a site is relatively warm (has a longer growing season with fewer killing frosts) is to look for land in mid-fall when you can compare how far along native trees are towards dormancy. Best fruit growing areas are often known in the East and will already have established orchards. People have been growing fruit here for 300 years but you might luck out, I guess, and discover your own tiny "banana belt". As far as productivity- of course you will be able to grow a wider range of varieties in a 6 than a 5 and some would yield more with a longer season- at least over time. But your question really seems to be can you find a Z6 in regions that are predominantly 5. I think it's the leeward (southeast) side of large bodies of water that have moderated temps as in far upstate NY, not far from Buffalo and areas like Lake Geneva. Also along rivers such as the Hudson Valley and running up the Housatonic in CT. Some of the fruit you listed, like cold-hardy figs and Jap persimmons aren't going to work for you, even in a Z6 without protection.

Most of the western trailing berries are not hardy unless you are in zone 7 or 8. I am a zone warmer than you and the only one I have found completely hardy is Metolius, but so far its not tasting good enough to be worth growing. If you want to protect them you may be able to grow them, I was able to grow Marion and Logan when protected. You need to put a ton of leaves on them so none of the canes are exposed; even a little exposure will kill one section of a long cane which will kill the whole tail of it. It is a lot of work to protect them over the winter so I decided not to bother with doing that. In terms of varieties, Black Butte is not considered one of the best tasting ones, and it has large thorns. Its only claim to fame is size of berries. Marion is much much better. My suggestion is to put in a few types and see which ones work the best. But first decide if you are up for all the work of covering and uncovering year after year. I made it through three years before I got sick of it. My orchard is too big and my free time is too small so it depends a lot on how much time you have for it. Scott

would be under the eave, so a part shade/shade situation. Would need to either grow to be no more than 3 ft. wide and preferably 12' tall. ==>> foundation plantings are planted to hide the foundation .. not on the foundation ... in my world.. if you are planting under an eave ... you are TOO CLOSE to the foundation .... conifers are trees.. they NEVER STOP GROWING .. ever ... all of them will eventually hit the eave how about a pic.. maybe its much different than what i am thinking ... though west coast MI is basically z6 ... i would not push it long run ... and go with a steady z5 plant... ken

funkyhat I do not know much about bugs, but read some about aphids - IIRC they do not lay eggs in soil. I do not have lots of info, but here are some of my notes: ..." Aphid sexuality is quite complex, including both asexual reproduction concluding with live birth and sexual reproduction concluding with egg laying. In spring, when hatching occurs, all emerging aphids are female and reproduce asexually, essentially giving birth to three or more clones of themselves every day. As the end of summer approaches, the reproductive strategy of aphids in climates with cold winters shifts and both males and females are produced. After mating, the sexually reproductive females deposit eggs in the protective crevices of plants; safe from harsh winter weather, these eggs hatch the following spring and the cycle begins anew... ...Each of the many aphid species has its own life cycle, but there are some features uniting nearly all of them. One feature most species share is that they are incredibly prolific. Wingless adult female aphids can produce 50 to 100 offspring. I searched for hardy Teas this winter--I ended up ordering Lady Hillingdon. It should do just fine--I found a pretty good z7 microclimate in front of a South facing bay window that has a wheelchair ramp acting as a wind break. The white walls and window reflect a lot of light--so it really is full sun despite the partial blockage of the ramp.

So how did it do? We had a very mild winter this past year, though when my neighbor's tried Lady Hillingdon, they lost them to another mild winter. Anything that doesn't seem able to handle zero is not going to have a long or happy life around here.

I am trying a few teas. So far so good, but they are still on the small side. I may be closer to a 7A though. Also reports say teas are not as disease-resistant in colder areas.

Lady Hillington is supposedly a little hardier than some of the others, so I'm trying her in a more exposed location.

Thanks so much Ann, Zak and everyone responding! Yes, I was originally thinking that styrofoam is essential for those teas, but if it needed any electrical wiring system, knowing my luck and common sense, I'd probably cause a fire, lol! And as Ann says, it may survive one winter but consecutive winters is a problem and yes Kansas does get very, very windy! I didn't think of this and thanks! The only respite is that the raised porch, trees and house help buffer that wind.

I will be curious Maureen if your Lady Hillingdon survives. RU says that there is a Marie Van Houtte which survived a customer's zone 5, Mad Gallica. But yeah, I think Ann is right that in the long haul it's gonna be tough and unlikely...I would end up having to keep replacing roses. But it'd be coool if we just happened to have hardier tea that can put up with our zones. What about Mrs. R B Cant (what RU says may work).

Looks like my other choices of the OGRs are far more safe so far because they aren't teas. But is Mrs. B R Cant as fragrant as the ratings say? That's another option I can look into. I will just have to sacrifice my wish for an apricot color.
