Companion plants for R. foetida: suggestions?

My R. foetida has just come into bloom and has confronted me again with the saturated, startling golden yellow of its flowers. 'Persian Yellow', the double form, is about to begin flowering a few roses down. These roses are in a large, heterogenous rose bed that we made a few years ago when we had a lot of roses to get in the ground and no time to work out color combinations. A thriving 'Zepherine Drouhin' in perilous proximity is fortunately buffered by the pale blooms of 'Stanwell Perpetual'. I can't expect any help from the nearby roses in complementing R. foetida, but it needs some company. The plants have to be small: subshrubs, herbaceous plants, annuals. The area is full sun, dry in summer, alkaline clay. Any suggestions? My brain reels back confounded when confronted with this task. Thanks!

Melissa
