Pink Evening Primrose looking sickly??
Comments (2)Thanks Al. So basically the "sickly" look is just them dying. And since they seed, there's no difference in me pulling them up versus cutting back, huh? You think enough seeds have set already so that they'll come back next year -- even if I pull them all up NOW? Or should I wait a bit and let them die off for awhile longer? Thanks, Bonnie...See MoreBad Luck w/ Pink Evening Primrose
Comments (7)Are you talking about the pink flowering trailing type? This will probably make you feel worse but I planted this once from seed and thought I would never get rid of it after it became invasive. Every single little piece of root, which were brittle and broke easily, would grow a new plant and lots of it was under a rock path. I had to lift the rocks to dig it out. So, on that note, I would suggest that any roots you can get planted underground may just make it finally even if they die back on top and you think the plant is dead. I had to practically sift the dirt to get it all out. It does go into shock after transplanting but I really can't believe some of it won't take hold after what I experienced. Wait and see because I bet some of it will come around that you planted. I see these plants in nurserys often but not Home Depot or Wallmart type of places. I wonder if you got some bad seeds since they really do come up easily?...See MoreEvening Primrose blooming...
Comments (24)I feel your pain, lindseyrose. Our patch of EPs last year looked almost identical to yours. (Nice photo.) And there's the rub: we like how they look, but in our hearts, we want a LAWN where they are. Our EPs are just beginning their show. Ours would have bloomed sooner but I mowed low a week or so ago. Time to mow again. It's getting hot, to where I really don't want to have to dig up the EPs, not even a little patch at a time. Meanwhile onward they spread. What little St. Augustine we want to keep is getting overrun. Our only consolation is that our nutsedge infestation is as bad or worse than the EPs: all the foliage, and no flowers! I guess a few of us are just "desperado gardeners" (from an old song by the Eagles) - the only (yard) beauty we want is the kind that we can't get. The EP grows best where we most desire for it not to, & never grows where we want it to. That's reason to call EP a WILDflower. The lasagna idea might work if you want to go that way. We set up some great flower beds with the lasagna technique. Good luck with your primroses!...See MoreEvening Primrose
Comments (3)Whole plant is edible as a vegetable. Add flowers to salads, or use them as a garnish. Use leaves in salads or stirfries. Seeds can be chewed, or cooked in breads and biscuits, or steamed, or roasted in the oven for 15-20 minutes at 180C and sprinkled on food like pepper. Leaves and roots can be eaten fresh. The roots are sometimes eaten like olives as an after-dinner treat, or boiled like potatoes. Medicinally, entire plant can be used, although the oil obtained from the flowers has the best medicinal virtues. Use 1 teaspoon herb per 1 cup boiling water, cool and drink cold, 1 tablespoon at a time over the course of a day. FOr medicinal purposes, the plant is best harvested in autumn, but it can be harvested at any time, really. Expert supervision is recommended when using the essential oil for medicinal purposes. Do not use this herb if suffering from epilepsy or taking anticonvulsive drugs. You know, of course, that some people refer to evening primrose as a weed? That's because once you've got it, it can take over! Which is just fine if you want to use it in quantity like you do. It's a pretty thing, and the perfume is divine, especially in the evenings. Why not try growing some violets, too? Violets have an even better folklore reputation for treating cancer (leaves mostly but also the flowers). You could also consider astragalus for improving the immune system, especially if you're having radiation or chemotherapy. Good luck, and of course please check with your doctor before starting on any herbal medicine regime, most particularly if you are already having conventional treatments....See Morebrit5467
