I think you should try Fragrant Cloud. I've been growing her for three years now, and I haven't had any problems with her. I do spray, but to be honest, I'm not a very regimented sprayer. I simply LOVE Fragrant Cloud. Out of 75, she is definitely one of my favorites.
Just think you might should give her another look.

Fragrant Cloud was no more disease prone than other HT's.

Fragrant Cloud is a family favorite here, and it should grow as well as any other HT in your city. At the end of the summer, mine can stay a little dewy in the morning because it doesn't get full sun until 9:30 or 10:00, so I do have to be careful with it. Sulfur dust is usually all I need, but your area is less than half the elevation and twice the humidity of mine.

The only issues I have with FC is that it fades quickly to dull coral and shatters.

At our old house, it was on the west with only afternoon sun, and didn't get blackspot as badly as several other HT's that were a few feet away. I never sprayed or treated the roses there. That bush was about 25yrs old when we moved, and it always flushed with 50-75 blooms, usually twice in a growing season. The scent would fill the entire neighborhood.

I love her fragrance, her color and form. That is why I put up with her even though she does get mildew here and I do have to treat her. By the way, she is pretty prolific.

LoveRoses, that is very interesting but I grew Fragrant Cloud adjacent to Valencia also. I lost my Valencia Easter 2007 when we had that late freeze, and I have subsequently eliminated all the roses in that bed, all 46.

Fragrant Cloud is very vigorous in cold zones, Valencia is not. I would expect your FC to do very well in your zone and to dominate Valencia. This is something you should think about. FC is no better or worse than other HT's regarding BS. It is simply one of the most vigorous and fragrant with outstanding color and it blooms profusely so you will always have lots of good fresh blooms.

A coral/vermillion rose that does have above-average disease resistance is 'Montezuma.' However, it is unscented to my nose. But I agree with other posters that FC is (from a cultural standpoint) a typical HT that will be fine if you spray fungicide.

I wouldn't call Fragrant Cloud a BS or PM magnet by any stretch of the word, however if you'd like a good substitute you can try one of its offspring: Alec's Red. It has much better form, excellent fragrance, and very health. It is a red with orange-ish undertones and its leaves are well formed (a contrast to Fragrant Cloud who's leaves tend to hang and droop).

Then again, you could always go for Fragrant Cloud.

A couple of comments based on what other posters have said. Stick with Fragrant Cloud. Montezuma is not a good rose and can't compare with with FG for your zone. Similarly, Alec's Red is not as vigorous as FG in your zone although it is a good rose. To me it is not as fragrant. FG is the most fragrant vigorous orangy red that there is and the best for cold zones.
