I have not grown Jean Bach Sisley to maturity here.

However, in my garden, I would compare the size and vigor of Smith's Parish to that of Mutabilis.
Maybe it's even bigger, to be honest.

The smallest reasonably mature one I ever saw was a good 8 ft. tall and at least 5 ft wide, and at that, it was sheared into a sort of tall oval form.

Jeri, thank goodness you alerted me to the size of Smith's Parish. I definitely need to move it so that it can be allowed to develop nicely. Maybe I'll put Maggie next to Jean Bach and hope they will be less competetive for real estate space.

Molly, Maggie is a big ole gal too. Probably not as wide as Mutabilis but still large. JBS is a big rose here and some think she's more like a tea rose than a china. I've planted JBS and teas 8 feet apart and they still grow together with some pretty heavy pruning in late winter.

Planting too close sure results in some astonishing thickets.

Good grief, I have been clutched from falling into the deep abyss! The last thing I want is crowded "big" roses, so I shall dig my Smith's parish right back up (I just planted it this a.m.) and I will simply have to find another space....far, far away. BTW, is this rose pretty enough to justify it's big land allotment?

Well, one woman's ceiling is another's floor.
However a big mass of perfect foliage, studded all over with medium-sized blooms in at least 5 different color
combinations sure works for me!

Jeri, do you think Smith's Parish would stay relatively disease free if planted in a location that doesn't get full sun until late, late morning? Most roses get full of grunge down here without sunlight first thing. That darn Northwest corner of my house is crying out for a nice speciman. If it can't be a rose then I'll research out a Florida native for that spot. I'm not wild about the sasaqua camellia I put there. (I guess I like the foliage on the japonicas better, but they need more shade than that spot allows).

Honey, I think Smith's Parish would stay disease-free on the Moon.
Ours got shade for its early hears from an orange tree. Of course, it's now grown far beyond the orange tree, but I never saw that the tree slowed it down any.

Of course, as you know, I don't know Florida conditions.
I bet Malcolm can tell you more about this rose in FL conditions.

Thanks Jeri. Malcolm told me once that his roses have always been pretty much in full sun from the get go, so he really doesn't have any experience with the whole partial sun thing. I know from my experimentations that most roses get fungal diseases when we get humid, if the sun isn't there first thing to dry the leaves. That's not to say that there aren't some that wouldn't have a problem, but I'm sure they're in the minority. The original Knockouts seem to take to it O.K. as long as they get all afternoon hot sun.
