Have you considered planting more of her? A mass planting just might be more impressive than a mixture of roses.

I'm with Ingrid -- if the bed is usually viewed from a distance, you'd want all the same rose. You can underplant with bulbs and add some salvia or veronica and voila! Mme. Antoine is the ONE rose on my wish list that eluded me this year. There's a lonely space in the garden with her name on it! Two plantings in my life I've really enjoyed-- a trio of Belinda's Dream in front of the house in Texas, and a long row of Roserie de l'Hay on that frozen hill in Ohio.

I'm going to join the crowd on this. A row of Madame Antoine Marie would be almost overwhelmingly beautiful.

Thanks for the suggestion! For some reason I never thought of just adding more of her.

My driveway area is kind of difficult to work with, as it borders my neighbor's property, and they have two oak trees that have gotten quite large (I suspect because they are on their septic system.) The back part of the area is a mixture of sun and shade during various parts of the day, so I planted a few camellias back there - not enough sun for roses, in my opinion.

The front area of the border is in full sun, although I can't recall if it gets shaded at all during the winter when the sun is lower and more southerly. Gosh....I hope not! I'm sure it wouldn't be full shade.

The area is 18 feet deep by about as long as I want to make it. Right now I have about 25 feet in length cleared of grass.

If you think the area may end up being a questionable for the Madame, (because I'm not really sure of any shading during the winter months), do you have any other suggestions? I suppose there's always Knockouts :(

From my experience if the rose has enough sun in the summer it can get by with a lot less in the winter. It would need some of course but not nearly as much.

Thanks Ingrid. I'm wondering if that's the case with many of the roses bred in England, where often they naturally go on that type of cycle. I don't recall offhand if that is where Madame Antoine Mari originated though.

Mari/Jupeau, 1901, France. I think it would look beautiful with yellow butterflies which forms a nice mass of pink,white and yellow single blooms.

Thanks Luanne. I think mass plantings of the same rose are beautiful, but I guess I'm fickle, because I get sorta bored with all the same thing. The other issue is that if one dies then I end up with a "hole" in the planting. At least with differing roses, another can be popped into place.

I didn't think of Madame Lombard, but I DID think of Mlle. Franziska Kruger this morning while having coffee.

What do you think of Safrano in the mix? Too bleached out most of the time?

Where can I obtain Mari/Jupeau? I never heard of it. It looks like a very pretty rose.

My other question is, how far apart should the roses be spaced if using differing ones?

AHEM! Plant different varieties! Once 'Mme. Antoine Mari' gets going she's a garden in herself, and you can enjoy different beauties if you plant different roses with her. I never have understood this mass planting business. As to varieties, I think Luanne's suggestions look good; 'Mme. Lombard' has a reputation for being a very tough rose (and my sister grew her in Tallahassee some decades ago), and I can testify that she's a fabulous looker, as mine has just come into bloom. I don't think finding roses that harmonize visually is going to be a problem at all, if you look among the Teas and Chinas, or a modern shrub (I assume that's what this is) like Luanne's 'Pink Butterflies'. 'Safrano would bleach out during the summer, I suppose, but just think how lovely she would be in October. I would avoid roses that have flowers that are really close in form and color to 'Mme. Antoine Mari', and you'd be all right.

I believe that "Mari/Jupeau, 1901, France" refers to 'Mme. Antoine Mari', giving breeder, introducer (?), date of hybridization or introduction, country where hybridized. I just stumbled across the name of the breeder of this lovely rose myself, and was wondering who he was, as I don't recall ever hearing about him in my meanderings through the rose world. His wife certainly received an honor in having the rose named after her.

Melissa, thanks for your feedback. Luanne mentions in the first picture "yellow butterflies". I wonder if that is the name of that rose, though I couldn't find anything on HMF. Very pretty. Hopefully, Luanne will check this thread again and let me know where she got it, and what the name of it actually is.

If you can think of any others that might go with Madame, please let me know.
