AN INVITATION FROM THE WORLD FEDERATION OF ROSE SOCIETIES:
Welcome!
Canada, a country of stunning beauty and striking contrasts, stretching from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean with its majestic snow-capped mountains and wonderful gardens, its inhabitants attached to traditions with their lilting accent either in French or English, will welcome delegates to the 15th World Rose Convention of the WFRS for the second time since 1985.

The Canadian Rose Society, along with the Vancouver Rose Society, has been working for many months under the leadership of Brenda Viney and Darlene Sanders. A comprehensive educational program featuring first-rate lecturers and guest speakers from around the world has been prepared by the organizing committee. During the daytime, delegates will also have the opportunity to view a spectacular Rose Show and a Rose Festival which will feature our favourite flower in an abundance of rose and garden displays. In addition, tours will be offered enabling delegates to discover Beautiful British Columbia. Ample time will be included for visitors to gather together and deepen the ties of friendship that bind all rosarians together.

The American Rose Society has decided to hold its spring convention in Vancouver during our world convention. I am overjoyed with this decision and it is my pleasure to extend our warmest greetings to all participants from the USA.

On behalf of the World Federation of Rose Societies, I am honoured to invite delegates from our 38 member countries to join us in Vancouver for the 15th World Rose Convention and I look forward to sharing many unforgettable moments together, thus contributing to the richness of our Federation.

Air
The Vancouver International Airport has consistently been rated as a top North American airport providing easy access from all over the world. The Vancouver International Airport is approximately 11 miles from downtown. Transfer service is readily available by the Airporter bus, taxi, limousine or car rental companies. An efficient airport transfer service, the Airporter transports delegates from the airport to all the downtown hotels at a cost of approximately $12.00 each way or $18.00 return. Taxi fares are roughly $27.00 and private limousine service is $34.00 one way + gratuity. All of these services accept credit cards. (All fees are approximate and are 2008 prices, Canadian.)

Car
Vancouver is also easily accessible by car from other parts of Canada via the Trans-Canada Highway and from the United States via the I-5 Freeway which connects Vancouver with the entire West Coast of the United States. In fact, many American visitors make the easy drive to Vancouver just to spend the day (Vancouver is only a 3 hour drive from Seattle)! Rail
Vancouver is served by two main railways Â VIA Rail Canada, which provides passenger service to other Canadian cities and Amtrak which accesses the US market. Located downtown, the Pacific Central Station is served by taxis and Translink, operator of local city buses, the Skytrain (a mono rail that makes convenient downtown stops), and the Seabus (linking Vancouver to North and West Vancouver).

Cut flowers/roses from all countries do not require an import permit or phytosanitary certificate. However, they are subject to inspection at the first port of entry (any port of entry to Canada) and must be free of pests and soil.

If you are shipping cut flowers or require assistance shipping cut flowers from the port of entry to the venue, then please contact Theresa Smith via email at tsmith@eventsonthemove.com. If you are bringing cut flowers with you, once you have cleared customs at the port of entry, then you simply bring the cut flowers to the venue.

The Rose Show takes place during the Rose Festival at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre. Details such as loading and unloading in preparation for the Rose Show will be provided upon registration as a Rose Show Exhibitor.

Customs Information
Events on the Move, the official Custom Broker for the World Rose Convention 2009, will assist everyone who will be crossing borders with roses.

What hilarity! Love the fun posts, and learning a bit about y'all in the bargain. For those who have ever read my few posts, I'm the clueless one, the transplant subset. If there's subsets of subsets, I would be the transient transplant. I spend my life following my spouse's work, geographically speaking. I pack houses, and unpack. I accumulate all manner of flower pots and containers, then downsize, give away, and move again. My gardening efforts are full of hearty enthusiasm, as well as serial plant murdering (I like to blame it on local plant ignorance and not my PJIC disease, *plants jump into the cart*). Since we never get to live in one place long enough for either the humans or the plants to put down deep roots, we transient transplants collect any and all plants fervently, via swaps, pinching starts at public malls and other venues, and the local garden center. Then, we moan and groan about disposing of our pot ghetto when the next move is announced. Transient transplants spend way too much time covering up and disguising the objectionable architectural features of our current rental digs. We creatively hang plants, put up fishing line trellises to cover up nasty window views, and annoy the neighbors with our homemade garden accessories, obtained in pre-dawn trash-day scrounging. These charming accents (yes, even the old commodes planted with petunias), feed our collector (#6) genes, which we fervently nurture upon arrival in our latest garden planting zone. We don't consciously try to be specialists (#7s), but once we latch onto a type of plant that we don't kill in the newest climate, we grow it in every color known to the species. Oh, and yes, we have even been known to dumpster-dive in #2 and #4's trash bins, where the plant pickings are amazingly healthy, lush, and green. We transient transplants have become experts at covertly watching your work through our mis-matched window coverings (read - sheets), knowing there's gonna be really good pickings in YOUR trash this week. This serves to help our garden budget go further, knowing we must fill up our pots and fronts of landlord's planting beds to overflowing in such a short period of time, before we have to frantically put it all back, to get ready for the next household moving cycle. When the next move is announced, we lovingly dig up, label, package, and mail starts of all these frantically planted pot ghettos to our Northern friends, for safekeeping until we get settled into our next digs. In actuality, our Northern plant recipients can't even remember our names, or why they are receiving these care-packages of dirt and mushy, frozen green blobs, resembling a refrigerator science experiment....

NW Gardening aside, what other forums are your favorites? Why?

At first I used to trade seeds on the Canadian forum but now I have so many plants I don't know what to do with them all! Also the rest of Canada is a different climate and so far away. Now I go straight to this forum and my other fave is PETS, where I have received much good advice about raising a dog. WINTER SOWING has the most enthusiastic group I have ever seen and really cheers me up in the winter! I just realized how many forums I haven't looked at, so when I have a few minutes to kill I try a new one.

Karl was the driving force behind creating this trophy, and it has been awarded every year since. It has been interesting to see which roses won the award. The best hybrid tea only won the award once, as I recall, with floribunda sprays and shrubs winning it the most times. I believe an OGR also won once.

While this isn't a recommended course of action, the year I saw an exhibitor chewing out the judges because his entry didn't win Best of Show was when I became convinced this has become an important award with exhibitors. Good job, Karl.
