What do you think of the Craftsman 316796140 line trimmer?

Hi!

A person is wanting to sell me their 4 stroke Craftsman

316796140 gas line trimmer for $50. Do you think it

would be a good investment? I just want to edge my lawn.

I don't think it has been used very much.

Hi!

I forgot to say in my post the seller
said someone had returned this line
trimmer back to Sears. Then this seller
got it and told me they are not using it
or they have not used it very much.

I have a Ryobi as well. I had the same problem. I changed the 2 fuel lines. They had a pin hole in them. This fixed the problem right away. I went to NAPA and got 2 feet of the fuel line(taking my old fuel line with to make sure I got the right stuff)and fixed it myself. The weird thing was that the pin hole was so small, it would run until I touched the trigger. I fixed that then the throttle cable broke 2 minutes after I fixed it.

IÃ¢ÂÂm not up on the latest trimmers, blowers, chainsaws but I doubt I have seen one that I had to pull the tank or carb to replace the fuel lines or cln the tank. if that is the easiest that is what needs to be done. My lessons have normally been, "I wasted too much time, work and frustration afterwardsÃ¢ÂÂ (due to my lack of experience, on a first time job). I feel most lines are routed simpler for the ease of replacing in recent years. Can you share a close pic of your carb/tank or a link as your carb/tank?

Also, if your trimmer currently has round line, try using one one the ones that have a squarish cross-section (the name slips my mind) They cost more but cut much better and last much longer than the round stuff.

I got the trimmer running yesterday after fitting a new fuel line. And yes, I got the copius blue smoke cloud upon startup. I still need to replace the foam air filter but by the looks of what came out, the foam is standard chair cushion. I've got an older but clean HVAC air filter that I'm cutting to fit. I was pleasantly surprised by the sound of the trimmer. The engine ran with a nice constant hum, no burping or oscillation. I do have to work with the gas tank screw cap. The threads are warped slightly and the cap screws on crooked. Also, during operation, gas/oil mix was bubbling up through the air hole in the gas cap. I'm thinking the hole in the gas cap is for air flow into the tank so I don't think that I can plug it. More tweaking to come but so far so good.

For $50, if it fire up, I guess. I usually don't like Craftsman, but $50 for the 4 stroke, yes.

Craftman quality has gone way down from what it used to be 25 years ago, The only thing good anymore is their hand tools. Steve

Wouldn't waste my money. Put that $50.00 toward a Echo or Stihl trimmer. You'll be money ahead. Stihl or Echo worse stuff will be better than Craftsman best. IMHO.

If the person selling it says it was returned to
Sears, how did he get it? And I would be curious
as to why the original owner returned it to Sears.
Too many 'red flags', so I would stay away from it.
