Name That Plant!

Daffodil, but what type?

I think I recall that these bloomed last year just in time for Christmas. This year it's just in time for Thanksgiving. Prior to last year, I think they bloomed in early spring...haha. My task for the large unruly bed this year is to get everything labeled as it blooms, including labeling the irises by color/variety if possible. Then I can reorganize the bed.

These are small flowers, no more than an inch across when fully opened. They are entirely white...the faint bit of yellow inside the cup visible in the pic is pollen I believe that has rubbed off onto the cup.

I don't believe that paperwhites would be hardy outdoors in zone 7. If these were outside over winter, they're likely to be some other variety.

Hard to say without knowning more details about your forcing procedures but it is rather unlikely that it is something to do with the bulbs themselves, given that all your other bulb types are doing fine and you got them from the same place. Paperwhites are about the easiest of all bulbs to force - they don't require a chill period and will grow roots and the beginning of foliage even in the stores and bulb outlets and will produce flowers promptly if grown only in rocks and water. My immediate thought would be too moist a soil condition. Narcissus need soils that are just barely moist until they start producing top growth. Is that possible?

Yes, definitely not Rip Van Winkle. One possibility that it 'might' be is Double Campernelle Van Sion I see is actually a synonym of Telamonius Plenus. Check out the pics of Telamonius Plenus at Daffseek. It also says, "Doubling varies from partial to completely double;" along with a lot of other Daff-speak that I don't comprehend well. I also think that there are some pics of the Telamonius Plenus at Daffseek that are just plain incorrect, but who am I to say such a thing? A couple of those pics look exactly like Rip Van Winkle. If my Telamonius Plenus (aka Van Sion) are still decent, I'll try getting a pic here soon. A pretty reliable source told me that what I had was Telamonius Plenus (aka Van Sion) and I'm thinking mine are different than yours. Sorry to be of such little help and maybe just being confusing. Preamble: My gardening style could be politely termed 'semi-organised chaos'. (The neighbour warns his kids about lofting their tennis balls over the fence - 'it's a jungle in there!' Ha!) So the daffodils hang out with a sequence of perennials, mostly: Hosta, Astrantia, Saxifrage, Libertia, Clematis integrifolia, polite Tradescantia, Origanum, Athyrium, Thalictrum, and bulbs that flower later such as Tritonia, Freesia, Ixia, Albuca, and the occasional calla. The 'worst' leaf problem comes, for me, from the very earliest - such as 'Erlicheer' - whose leaves linger until nearly Christmas and they're too big to disguise, so I pretend they're not there and let the Aquilegias, miniature roses, and true Geraniums divert the eyes. (It mostly 'works'...I hope.) If I use annuals I tend to go for plants such as petunia, verbena, and Impatiens because I am a lazy waterer for the in-ground plants. The plus, for me, is that the perennials are well-established now and quickly cover the daffodil sites with leaves without encroaching on their actual space; so the soil stays protected and slightly damper - which suits several of the cyclamineus sorts. And they're at rest when the daffs are heading toward the sun. The annuals usefully provide colour spots and continuity. I'd propose using both.

Liza, I have been trying to decide whether to buy from Daffodil Depot or JScheepers...back and forth, back and forth. Have you bought from both suppliers? I was considering the Daffodil 100 and some extras (doubles, butterfly types). I will have to look up the ones you suggested. Let me know if you can, the difference in quality between the two. I had planned to order some tulips and lilies from JS, but may go with Colorblends for the daffs/tulips and JS for lilies (price is good). Thanks. BTW, the idea you gave me (us) about the plastic cups/lids really has taken off. I have sold probably 75 mixed bouquets this way since June. I'm so excited! I just did a bridal shower, a company picnic and a bigger bouquet for a co-worker's girlfriend. You don't know how much your idea meant to me. It also helped me a lot, because my roses aren't long-stemmed (like from a florist) and I only have to use the pedicel and bloom from the lilies because the vases are so short! They look like paperwhites to me, had them come back for a couple of years when I lived in zone 6/7 NJ as they were planted very close to a stone foundation that faced south!

I'm in the Dallas area. These have been in the ground, in a large bed (13 x 85 feet), unprotected, since before I bought this house 4 years ago. I've never covered anything in cold weather, never watered in hot dry weather, and the bed is completely packed with stuff, so everything is very crowded. (Every spare inch of soil in this bed is packed with grape hyacinth bulbs, and some actually come up on top of or in the middle of other plants. Tips on how to get rid of the hyacinth short of digging up and sifting through the entire bed are gratefully accepted...hehe.)

They gotta be paperwhites. My grandmother's do very well in Dallas too.

Thanks! The various bulbs and tubers in the bed all do really well, without intervention, and I'm mostly just satisfying my own curiosity in identifying them as much as possible. Now to get the spots labeled so I know what I'm digging up 8 months from now.

They survive year after year outside for me in zone 7.
