Large b&B oaks brittle branches?
Comments (10)well ... i never lived in GA.. but arent you a little early ... up here.. oak are one of the last to leaf out ... and all you can exercise is patience .... you have scratched once.. good enough ... no matter how many times you want to check .... i would hesitate to keep doing it repeatedly .... leaf out is a function of soil temps.. at root depth .. not air temps... so even if it has been warmish for you .... if you bury your head 3 or 4 feet into the ground [and dont forget your mulch is keeping the soil cool longer] .. you will find.. most likely.. little or no soil warming to trigger root growth.. which will trigger leaf out ... i think the plant needs to start pumping water up into the tree ... to start plumping the buds to expand and break .... i dont know if that is science.. or just my way of thinking about it all ... i am not impressed with small branches being dead ... perhaps they were sacrificed due to the transplanting of incredibly large specimens .... regardless .. what will be.. will be .. and all you have ... right now .. is time to wait to see what the result is ... it is also not uncommon up here in z5 .. for last years transplants to delay leaf out even longer .... simply based on the transplant .... i dont see why that would be different for you ... maybe dan knows .... good luck ken PS: shade will increase the amount of time it takes .. for the soil to warm ... so expect those trees to be behind the curve ... pps: my bigger worry.. up here in the great frozen north.. more than initial bud break.. would be a heavy frost or freeze after the leaves appear .... if there was loss of the first set of leaves.. on a tree with basically no roots [comparatively speaking] .. there just might not be the reserve of stored energy to releaf ... and then you will have problems .... but right now .... your only problem .. is PROBABLY .. your anxiety ......See MoreLarge branch damaged my Aconitifolium, what should I do? Comments (3)I disagree in theory with 99% of the tree authorities on dressing wounds. Before I go into my typical abstract rant I will say if it were mine I'd probably spray up to the recommended maximum with whatever insecticide you feel is most "tree safe". Those are open wounds inviting in all the tree sugar loving insects of the world. My abstract rant says animals despite millions of years of evolution survive longer with bandages over open wounds. So would trees if we knew what to bandage them with. Unfortunately horticultural medical science is in its infancy. Something akin to human medical science 300 years ago. We just don't know what magic material or chemical to treat them wounds with to keep the cambium moisture in and decay/bugs out. There, makes me feel better to say it lol. I think your tree will recover as well. Just keep an eye out for opportunistic insects....See Morepruning large branches
Comments (16)I believe in MANAGING plants. As we decide how to feed them water them, care for them in terms of diseases .. we can also decide and controls their size and growth habits to our own advantage. A tomato plant does note foresee a cold season ahead, as if it thinks that can grow forever. That is why always aims to grow MORE AND MORE BRANCHES so it can grow MORE fruits/seeds. But we, the gardeners, have our own agenda. We are not there to guarantee the survival of its specie but pick fruits from it. So then the plant's natural goal is not exactly the same as ours. Then there are the economics of our resources, i.e. land, water and our efforts that we aim to maximize our benefits. That is why commercially they have come up with plants with certain size, growth habits and fruit sizes that are easier to manage for better productivity. So here is an example of my case: Say, I have a super 100 cherry that if left unchecked will take over my backyard. It is just the beginning of flowering. It has over 60 flowers and buds already, the largest fruit it has is the size of a pea. It is already over 3ft tall. I have controlled it so far to have just one more lateral branch. I am not sure how long it will take for those 60 fruits(aprox) to ripen. I am sure by then another 60 or more buds and flower will be produced. Then by sometime in September the weather is going to cool down. And it will be very unlikely for any flower from thereafter become a ripe fruit. Knowing these general things, I decide to control (prune) The sweet super 100(just an example). It has happened to me many times in the past that in the fall I had to pull up tomato plants with dozens of green tomatoes on it. How much green tomatoes did I need to pickle ??!! heh!...See MoreHow to flush out large amounts of debri and rock from laterals???
Comments (0)Hi, Im a first time home owner and ever since we purchased our home a few years ago, our backyard sprinklers were a disaster. The previous owner had zero aspirations of taking care of the place and so 9 out of the 10 sprinklers were completely broken off at the riser where dirt eventually filled in each hole leaving no evidence that a sprinkler even existed in several locations... For some time we just dealt with it being DOA when we got here since we never use our backyard all that much... finally, i decided I was tired of having my backyard look like a wasteland so after completely swapping out all of my front yard sprinkler heads with the brand new ones successfully I decided to take a stab at fixing this monstrosity myself. So far Ive dug out each sprinkler head location. Each one appears to have at least some dirt and rock thats entered the pipes over the years... others are not as bad... one things for sure, its full of a lot of debris. What is the the proper, and preferably "easy" way to clean all of this gunk out so that I can begin to fix my backyard sprinkler system finally? *A couple unique things to note: The backyard laterals have been cut off from the main water supply intentionally when we first purchased the house since at the time, we were told by our adjacent neighbor that we were leaking into their yard... later, it turned out to actually be a cracked pipe under their own foundation but since we couldn't find the source of the problem at the time since technically our backyard irrigation did leak "a little" I opted to sever the line and just seal it up for the time being... so right now, if I need to use water pressure from the main supply in order to flush it out Im going to have to couple it back together first, easy task, just something to note - since I don't know if theres a way to flush it out first before reattaching the main lateral??... What I had considered doing so far: 1. Cut off the PVC caps that I glued on in the past and couple the main pipe back together to allow water to the backyard again... 2. Flush system typical way, ie. open valve box up progressively to allow water pressure to hopefully clear out each head that is blocked with dirt and rocks. Concerns: By proceeding with flushing the system out the way I proposed above - I am worried that I will just immediately get dirty backflow that goes directly back into each riser... not sure how to solve this??? ...Maybe cap off all but 1 riser at a time and then build a flushing tool to force water away from the hole?? ...thats the best idea I've come up with but could def use some words of wisdom on this one. Thanks for your help!! ...Here are some examples:...See More- 17 years ago
