Craftsman Garage Door Opener opens at random

I have three problems with my Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener (about 6 years old). I don't know if the problems are related.

1. For the last few months, my two remote openers have been working off and on. They have worked for several days in a row, then stopped working for days in a row, then started to work again for days in a row, and so on. Meanwhile, the inside door opener and the wireless opener have worked every time.

2. The last couple of weeks the garage door has started to open at random. At times, when coming back to the house the garage door has been open. It has also opened in the evening and at night (we have made absolutely sure that the door has been closed when leaving the house and at night). It appears to open at random without the use of any control (inside, wirless, or remote).

3. Last night, the doors had opened on its own, and refused to close when hitting the door control. The door went down part of the way, stopped, and then back up. After trying to close it 5-6 times, I finally had to disengage the door from the opener to be able to manually close the door.

Are these problems related? What can I do to fix it?

Problem 1. Have you checked the batteries? I know it's basic but I have to ask.

Problem 2. Sometimes the installers use staples that are not insulated on the wiring for the wall control. Make sure these have not cut through the insulation. This can cause intermittent operation. If you live near an air force base there can be other problems but I really haven't an answer for this. I have only heard the frequency used by opener companies belongs to the military and they are taking it back.

Problem 3. Make sure the door sensors are pointed directly at one another. There is a small light on each sensor and they both need to be on to work properly. Make sure they are not blinking ever so slightly.

I don't think your problems are related but...........

Have you seen that commercial on TV yet? "Hey Honey, what's this wall switch for? What does it do?"
He flips the switch, up and down, and 4 houses down street the lady's garage door beats her car to death!
OR: Maybe you have a ghost!
Better have good locks on both cellar doors! And, from the MANY queries about troubles with Craftsman garage door openers, i'd suggest biting the bullet, and get a better quality one installed!

sorry to be confusing--the first door opener quit working after I replaced the battery. I had a second opener which also quit after replacing the battery. I now have two openers that no longer work. If your theory is correct, can you advise how to fix it? Thank you!

Sounds like your receiver has quit. Hard wired wall control and keypad doesn't use it so it keeps working. Time for a new opener. That one is old and outdated anyway.

We had a similar problem and the fix was simply aligning the sensors. It is so easy for them to get bumped out of alignment.

I have a problem with both of my remotes. The new garage door motor was installed 3 years ago and we got two remotes. One worked for only a month and the other until recently, but with neither one working it is a problem. The ID numbers are: IC2666A TX2028 Date: 11/05 139.53753 FCC ID: HBW2028 Do you have any suggestions? I thought about trying to replace the battery, but rarely used and not that old, although I would do that, but truthfully I can't figure out how to open the unit. I need all the help you can give me!

What is best way to change top of drive gear sprocket ? Does the whole assembly come out from the top or bottom ? The top sprocket fell of the shaft..Thx

rusty go back to your junk yard.

zeeman that assembly comes off through the top. It is a good time to check your door and associated hardware. It is usually the cause of this assembly to go bad.

Maybe some kids in your neighborhood have found a garage door opener, and are trying to drive you crazy! After all, there are only so many combinations available for GDO's! Bound to be duplicates at times!

hemodsson: i am having the exact same issues you are having. have you been able to find a solution to your door randomly opening?
