Sacramento City Cemetery Open Garden

I sent a message to my co-List Admin for the Dalmatian List, warning her that I would be away for a few days.

She wrote back that she wasn't going to be gone during that period, so no worry.

Then she added: "Off to visit a Cemetery. Woo-HOO."

I sent her back this pix, from last spring's Open Garden.

*** Yes. In addition to the roses, it's an extraordinarily peaceful and happy place. I love some of the sculpture as much as I love the roses and other things growing there.

Anita thank you for the information on Coulterville Red. I guess I must keep waiting and hoping:) That sure is a little beauty. I had to chuckle when you said there were quite a few people in line last year. Is that what you call that polite, smiling, orderly mob that hovered near the rose tables waiting for the sale to begin?:) Can you say seriously focused on a goal? I was at the back waiting to see just how determined those folks were about getting the roses they wanted and now I know. Those people were NOT messing around! Like I said all very polite though. I have to look at the catalog again and see what I must have now. I had a couple of fatalities during our cold snap of 4-ish degrees in December which will open up valuable real estate in the front bed. Thanks again. Kate

I grow Barbara's Pasture Rose at home. I agree about the fragrance - I love to cut a stem for the windowsill over my kitchen sink, so that I can catch a delicious raspberry scent as I walk into the room. The cemetery BPR is bigger than Jeri described, but I have one at home that is about five high by four wide. I cut it back harder than we do a lot of the cemetery roses, to about 3 1/2 feet, and keep cutting stray canes off that are blocking the pathways or crowding other plants. Each cane removed becomes a cutting, of course, which is where all of those BPRs in the sale came from! Anita

A wonderful day. We sold all of the roses, and a lot of t-shirts, aprons and other merchandise, too. The garden and weather cooperated. It was in the mid-seventies. The Teas and Chinas are at peak, and the banksiae are still looking good. We saw friends old and new - got to say hi to many of them. Fred Boutin came!!!! (Rose collector and botanist extraordinaire, whose roses are the foundation of our garden.) It was so nice to be able to ask questions about the roses in the collection, and to show him some new, intriguing treasures. Jolene Adams, soon to be American Rose Society President, was there. So were Gregg Lowery and Ron Robertson. We were so honored by their presence, but everybody who came, novice and expert alike, contributed to the happiness and success of the day. At least eight or ten members of this forum were there, many of whom helped out. We had volunteers from the Bay Area, southern Cal and Nevada. Things went very well because so many people helped out. I'm pooped. Went back to bed this morning and took a nap this afternoon, and probably will go to bed early. It was worth it, however! Anita

That is "Tamalpais Homestead Tea," a Tea-or-Old-HT collected in the Mt. Tam area of Mill Valley. Pretty delicious, I think. Kippy -- 18 April is a little early for most of the roses up in the Sierra Foothills. Late May might be more like it. Maybe even very early June -- depending upon the weather. We've done psychic tours in the past, with people who claim to feel spirits in some spots. We do Lantern tours with rather lurid stories of the way that some of the people lived, and met their demise. I guess I'm unimaginative or unspiritual, but I've been in the cemetery at night under a full moon, and have felt nothing but peace and love, and respect for the skunks ambling by, and the barn owls sweeping silently overhead.

I've been in a great many cemeteries.
We do seem to spend a lot of our so-called free time in such places.
I really think the Sacramento City Cemetery is the loveliest I've seen.
And as full of life as it is these days, it does embody a strong feeling of peace, safety, and caring.

In any of these places, I spend some times with the markers. There are so many stories there, if you read, and compare dates, and names, and some of the stone carvings are surpassing beautiful.
Almost as lovely, and interesting, as the roses.

Now, now Anita.

One doesn't go at midnight to meet ghost in the Sacramento Cemetery.

One goes at noon. Surely, you've met them? No?

There are at least two according to my good friend who's accompanied me up there on several occasions. He was the one who pointed out to me that we had now met the same woman on each of our three visits, in precisely the same spot, dressed in precisely the same clothing, and that on each occasion she said the same thing upon surprising us:

"I'm not a ghost." Of course, as my friend points out, that's exactly what she is.

Then there's the lady, dressed in business attire, always the same business attire, who walks down the path under the Philips and Rix rose arch... but never emerges that very short distance on the other side...

At least that what my friend says...

I'm always too busy taking photos to pay attention to "supernatural" type stuff.
