Generator requires frequent field flashing....

My Craftsman (made by Generac, 1996) 6.5hp 3,250 watt generator runs great. HOWEVER, if it goes more than a few days without use, it needs to be flashed to make power.

I hooked up my DVM before flashing and saw about 3.5 volts at the 120 volt outlet.

I use the electric drill in reverse method of flashing, and the power comes right back and is fine.

But more than a few days without use, and it's flash time.

I'm no tech, so I've been researching online. What I've seen tells me that a rotor that won't keep it's magnetism should be replaced.

I checked out the sears parts website, and a new rotor assembly is about $400.

If the rotor is bad, I'm thinking perhaps a new generator would be a smarter way to go, keeping this one as a backup.

It's a shame though, as this one runs so well.

Any help would be appreciated.
