Could we peek inside your greenhouse?

Could we peek inside your greenhouse? Would love to see some photos of both inside and out. We are in zone 5, so am really interested in what you have growing in a greenhouse in our zone this time of the year. Our growing in the greenhouse will consist mostly growing seedlings late winter early spring and possibly fall lettuce. Who knows what will develop once we get greenhouse addicted.

We did buy a 10x 12 HFG, but a going to wait and take our time putting it in the right spot and build it correctly. We thought about getting it together yet this spring. We have hilly land and its just to wet were we are thinking of placing the HFG. So in the mean time will be putting up our portable greenhouse that we use in the spring for hosta seedings and veggie seedlings.

This is my first winter with a greenhouse so i have no idea whats possible but...

FYI - it is unheated so far and likely I may not do any additional heat in the future.

I planted peas and beets in November when I first got the plastic up. The peas came up and grew to about 3 inches and then slowly grew throughout the Winter. The beets came up and didn't grow at all. Didn't die off either.

Because my "soil" is almost beachsand, the beets got burried because the condensation in the GH literally caused it to rain and the splashing sand covered them. I can still rinse them off and find a few survivors. The peas have taken off and are now over a foot tall.

I have added two in-ground beds and the following are all growing nicely. Broccoli, lettuce, spinach, beets, raddishes and peas. Broccoli and peas are about 3". The rest is just coming up.

The grass needs mowing... it's about a foot tall. As i add new beds i am removing it. Other weeds have started growing the past week. I need to get something to kill them off. Saw a propane torch used for that. Don't really want to use roundup indoors.

I also winter over gooseberries, raspberries, marionberries,figs,aronias and rosa rugosa inside. They are waiting to be sold in this water tank cold frame.

Terryster-thank you for your post. I feel like an idiot for asking dumb questions. However you all have been so nice and helpful. I too am growing for a living so I guess that's why I have been nervous. My plants are looking really good right now. So I'm feeling pretty positive about it all. I was worried about spreading fungus and growing disease. However the humidity has been low during the days now. My greenhouse is 16x36. My exhaust fan is about 48" and the same with the vent. It's a rainbow gutter connect greenhouse. I'm only using half of it for the greenhouse and the other 16x36 for a shade house. I have two good sized(not sure of size)fans mounted up high for circulating. We bought everything except the heaters used. So all the fans were less than 200 dollars. I think I was too dumb not to realize how fast it would warm up in the winter. I guess because the first few days I was struggling to get the temps past 50. However,it was only 8 outside then. So when I didn't have to use the heaters I was like wow! lol I have roses,clematis and several other perennials in large pots on benches. Then I have one long bench with my trials on starting seeds(hoping I can do fine,but ordered plants so I would know I have some to sell if not). The other day my soil temp were 89 was when the temp rose over 100. Now I see what your saying,because when it's 80 inside the soil temps are about 50-60 now. I now have the exhaust hooked up to kick on with the thermostat. It has made a big difference.

When temps drop below freezing outside, they drop below freezing in the greenhouse as well, Tom. We use a small electric heater and sometimes add a heat lamp. If I remember to close the doors before the sun drops down low, the heat collected during the day will last into the night and the heater comes on with a thermostat. Temps here usually only dip low just before daylight. We keep a Coleman heater in reserve, but never had to use it last year. We also have a big kerosene heater, which would probably fry the plants, lol. If your basement has windows, it would be overkill. At worst, you could have some little trolleys to trundle flats of seedlings in and out before the last frost date when they need more sun. I used an old kitchen trolley in the toolshed. Harbor Freight has some nice little tool trolleys that they put on sale frequently. The cat is going to move to a new wood cat hut atop the dog hut when we get it finished. His former cat hut, a cardboard box, has been trashed. The door is back on the dog hut and Buffy has already moved in. The dog hut has a heat lamp and the cat hut is on top where the heat rises to heat it, too. The whole contraption is on the south side of the house on the carport out of the prevailing north wind. Mmm. Hate photobucket. Okay, so clicking, you do eventually get to a larger picture. And, my comments: You have at least 2 toilet rooms with inswing doors. For safety, those need to be modified. In both cases, the layout is not conducive to simply changing them to outswing or pocket doors, but it is necessary (the J&J, you might be able to put in a pocket door easily enough, depending on where you put your water lines for the tub). The master bath WC--you might look into something like an ergon door, or rearrange that space to get a pocket. The reason NOT to have an inswing is... if someone collapses/has a medical emergency in the WC room, and there is an inswing door, the person usually falls against the door/on the floor in front of the door preventing EMS from accessing them. The hinges to an inswing door are also on the inside of the WC, so EMS cannot simply remove the door... SWIM? It is rare that this sort of thing happens, but I'd hate for it to happen in my house (or a house I reviewed on GW) when planning for that sort of thing could literally save a life. Where is your upstairs in relation to your down? Can you get a laundry chute in one of the bedroom baths? Do you like having windows in your closet? It is odd that you've decided to put your closet on a corner of the house--usually prime real estate within a house footprint for light--where you don't need (or necessarily want) light there. Maybe, to solve your WC issue, you can think about changing the location of your master bath/closet (swapping them). In either case, your WC will probably be the same (far) distance from your bedroom. Will that be okay with you in the middle of the night? Any reason NOT to have windows on 2 sides of your master bedroom? (for example, is there a house right there)? I would take your kitchen layout to the kitchen's forum. I like that you don't HAVE to walk through the kitchen from the garage entrance, but I don't like that if you do, you are walking past the stovetop to get to the great room. And, I think it looks like you have a HUGE aisle between the sink and the island. How will you use your island? For prep? Normally, your ideal prep space is between stovetop and sink. But, here, you have no real prep space for that. If you think you will use the island for prep, it is essential it have a prep sink, since it is so far away from your main sink. Where will your MW be? I like the location of the fridge fine. But, I am concerned you may have your MW located over by the sink. This will put main kid traffic (between fridge and MW) right through your cooking zone (stovetop). Again, not a good spot for your cooktop. The kitchen forum can help you optimize all of this. Otherwise, without seeing dimensions, knowing where you live, or what orientation for the house, I think it looks pretty good. I like that your J&J bath only has 1 door to the toilet and only the sinks are true J&J. If you do J&J, that is the way to do it, imo. Also, I didn't really look at the elevation/exterior (not really where I excel...I'm more a floorplan junky). Enjoy!

These pics are from last year, but were taken about this time last year. 90% of what is in the greenhouse is hot peppers. We are in Indiana, so the greenhouse helps us start our peppers early to allow for a decently early harvest.

Question for those of you with hoophouses...

How do you heat it? What temp ranges do you keep or aim for?

I started a mini-hoop (4' x 12' x 4' tall) this March...and might be interested in scaling up if all goes well.

Well that depends on what I have in mine at the time. I have both a heated GH for over wintering plants and a smaller heated GH just for seed starting. Once my seedlings are re-potted they go into the Hoop house which I also use for propagation of stuff during the summer. I have a kerosene heater for the hoop house if I think the temp will go below about 35F. Even if the outside temp goes to 32F the hoop house will stay warmer, and if the temp only drops for a few minutes overnight it won't hurt anything. In my zone I hope the temps won't get too low again.

Eric...thanks for the photos. I could mingle for a long time in your greenhouse. Do you have vents?

Grow-anything....thanks for you photos. I to have a portable green house like yours but dont have it set up yet. Soon though as I started tomatoes and peppers in the house today.

We are inspecting our 10x12 HFG tonight. There are so many rips and dings in the box that it is really making me nervous. The biggest smash in the box in right next to the panels. So we will see if we keep this one or it will go back to the HF store. If this is the case we will go with something else.

I want a greenhouse up now!!!!
If only our ground was level and I was more handy with tools!!

Spring fever is upon us, 59 degrees, sun is shinning and spring bulbs are up.

Is that a Meyers Lemon? If it is, how is your production. How much fruit can a small bush handle?

Yes That is a Blood Orange but I do have 3 Meyer Lemons flowering. Hard to say about production because I have had it for less than a year. It has flowers, green fruit and ripe fruit on it at this time...

I need to weed my spinach and make more soil blocks. (Why do I broadcast seed? Stupid, stupid, stupid... ) I also need to dig around the north and east walls (left and far walls) and install the rest of the foundation insulation and rat barrier.

Looks good. I real like the frame of your greenhouse.

How about a "I" beam and trolley down the middle. Connect your chair to it, so you can fly around weeding and thinning.

We got our plastic greenhouse or what ever you call those up last night. Nothing in it yet, still to cold here.

You can almost smell the blossoms in the photos. Love the lemons. What are you going to make with them?

I work as a temp at a local greenhouse in town that sells annuals wholesale. Yesterday I worked in one of the small houses....all day I kept thinking I want my HFG up! Still way to wet in the area. More rain/snow is predicted over the weekend.
