well .... how the heck do i know.. lol ... its really just to your wishes ... are you a compulsive.. and want the job done yesterday ... and perfect.. and have the budget ... space them close ... if you are a patient gardener .. and this is a 5 year plan .... 10 year.. whatever it takes ... then plant a few.. propagate a few.. add the propagated ones to the far end in fall .. propagate more.. etc ... and just take the time to build your dream ... i just cant answer this question with any idea.. of such ... would you rather have 10 feet of the project spaced to perfection ... or stretch it out with the goal of 'filling in' .. as the years roll by??? but looking at the pix ... at the link ... i would suggest 5 to 8 feet apart ... minimum.. IF you wish to retain some semblance of the ball shape .... as compared to the privacy yesterday .... but if you want basically a wall ... 2 to 3 feet apart.. would sure fill it in faster ...... i hope you do understand.. that when those plants at the link .. are twice as old.. whatever their age.. they will probably be twice as tall.. and twice as wide.. and you will be creating a maintenance nightmare.. as the years roll by ... as is common with SHRUBS... and hedges.. they are not going to remain those cute little plants w/o vigorous REJUVENATION PRUNING.... and the reason i mention this.. is that what i was willing to do 12 years ago [hard work.. lol] .. i am finding i have no interest in the heavy labor as the years roll by ... so you might not want to line out 100 feet of this type of plant ... or maybe you do.. its up to you ... good luck ken Here is a link that might be useful: link

Pat, Scully has a point. Plastic pots do work well but it won't insulate the plant. Your best approach if you wish to containerize a tree is to find or build a concrete planter and line it with styrofoam insulators (the ones used for houses). Scully if you intend to go through with such a plan, obviously you will need to build the planter in place. Or if you wish to purchase the planter and have it delivered to the precise area you wish to set the tree. Any tree can be containerize and I have had experience in miniaturizing trees (like bonsai). Make sure the drainage holes are located on the side of the planter and not beneath. The reason is that willow roots will try to seek water and could escape through the hole. If the hole is located beneath, there's no chance you will be able to lift that planter to cut it off. However this will be able to do if the drainage holes are on the sides. Willows are very hardy and they can withstand cold temps. But I have a feeling plastic pots will not be enough to keep the plant healthy. I presently have the corkscrew willow potted in terra cotta and it's been with me for the past 7 years. However I have it on a porch and so not as exposed as what you plan to do. Oh, and the width of the crown of the tree would be approx. 2x the size of the planter. The height would be something like 3x or more the height of the planter. Basically the smaller the planter, the smaller the plant and the more you'd need to water them. another thing, when you are ready to plant, take a pipe and sink it in the soil. Use this to water the plant since the pipe could reach the roots deep below. This is especially important when the plant starts to get root bound. Otherwise when you water, most of that will simply roll out and not reach the roots within.

TONI rub it in will you? Mine didn't make it and I used the vermiculite and bag trick this time! I did actually manage to get some sedum to finally put on some roots, last year I did my rooting in August with hardwood cuttings I am going to try that again this year and see how it goes. I have a purple butterfly bush, a honeycomb BB and a red bottle brush I wish to try this time. I SOOOOO hope the bottle brush takes it is sooo pretty. I do have a few hardwood cuttings of a smoke tree in water and I thought they were dead so I was going to through them out the other day and noticed some callousing and thought NO WAY is that root starts BUT I honestly THINK it is so I stuck them back in the water! I SOOOO hope those make it and are not just a false start LOL. Toni I think I am gonna send cuttings to you we can share my cuttings LOL.
