I thought I'd start this thread to find out what everyone has been planting this year. I have been planting like crazy over the last week or so. I've been trying to fill my garden up so eventually it will grow in nice and full. I always say, the more flowers you have, the less amount of space there is for weeds!

I have been busy!!! The weather is getting nicer here (finally!) so I've been planting almost every day (when I'm not working). I don't know where I get the energy from but when I need it, it's there. I still haven't received any of my daylily orders yet either and I may buy one more clematis so the planting continues.......

Lilies: Centerfold, Montezuma & Muscadet - replacements, Eye Liner, Mona Lisa, Blackout, Luxor.

Over the last year I've added 2 varieties of apples, purple leafed plum, lavenders, german chamomile, roman chamomile, chicory, yarrow, elderberry, wolfberry, another hazelnut, borage, garlic, and comfrey, as well as veggies like peppers, tomatoes, radishes, scarlet runner beans, and I've just sown 2 varieties of kale. I added some things a bit late (I just recently found out about edible forest gardens!), so I may need to replace a couple of things that look iffy. This fall I'm hoping to add raspberries, thornless blackberries, red currants, grape vine, and a mulberry.

Oh, wow, where do I start. My Mom died in July and I inherited her orchids. I know how to water them and that's about it, so I'll need to learn to repot as many of them are growing out of their bounds. I also inherited a big hoya that I need to revive since the landscapers at her house yanked it out of the pot and were going to toss it. I got it back but it's worse for the wear. My other goal is to improve the look of the protected back yard garden in the winter months. I have lots of plants that look great and lush in summer but in the winter it looks pretty bare back there, particularly the plumeria "sticks". I like low maintenance plants with a lot of color, so I'm looking for a lot of different species of crotons, I think they look great and particuarly if there are a lot of them planted in groupings. I also want to keep planting beds and ground cover so I can eventually get rid of all my grass. I'd like to start vermicomposting. And when my mom's house sells, I'll put in a walled courtyard with a pool, so it will be fun to plan the landscape for that area. I'm really looking forward to that.

bpgreen, thanks for helping me remember what RTF is. Steve said "...She'll eat some pie, but it's all about the crust for her.... I have to eat a whole pie myself!" Sounds like torture. I'd suggest you keep making 'em. Maybe one day she'll acquire a taste for it. I used to be a crust person myself. I discovered that I have 'superior' taste buds and now love the pie filling too. I just use much less spice. It was irritating to me to eat apple pie that tasted like cinnamon instead of apples. Many recipes call for too much spice, IMHO. I have a good no-sugar-added pie filling recipe.. I adjusted the spices to suit myself and, this year found a good low fat crust recipe. I'd never realized before having fruits fresh from my own trees, just how good they would be. The apples from my Fuji are different than those from a grocery store... more flavorful and even crisper. Don't rub in my lack of nectarines, Steve. :-( The thought of a juicy fresh nectarine or peach (or even frozen in a smoothie) sounds delicious! One year we got a box of nectarines fresh from a friends tree. Great fresh, needless to say, and the low sugar jam I made from them was fabulous! Parrots: Part of the reason I grow organically on my property..... I mostly have African parrots but also have a couple of Blue & Gold Macaws and a flight of 3 older cockatiels (2 well into their 20's). The "Psittacine" in my online name means 'of or pertaining to parrots'. I was a 'psittaculturist' (raised and studied them) for almost 30 years... retired from the "raising" part a few years ago. They definitely aren't for everyone because, if their needs are truly addressed, most are higher maintenance pets than a dog or cat. I've raised many species of parrots, or have studied them. I've also raised barn swallows, a killdeer, sage thrashers, humming bird, magpie, a starling (fun bird! much like a Magpie) and a common sparrow (Twiggy, one of my favorites)and maybe others I've forgotten. Have never been able to save a common robin, though. What species of conure was yours? Steve said: "Always wanted a falcon, though! Maybe someday..." Not an easy thing to get a raptor license. There is a guy that lives a few blocks from me who is a falconer and has a raptor rehabilitation license. His golden eagle died of West Nile Virus last year, (he now has a new one for his education program). They are beautiful animals. Crystal

So sorry for your loss zach. My resolution is to get every potted rose in the ground so I don't have to do the pot polka, in the garage/basement when it gets cold, back out again when it isn't. With temps going down to the teens tonight, I still have some pots to bring it. I have all the ones upstairs in the garage and I tried to get all the ones in the backyard in the basement last night, but the light has apparently burned out so I will have to go out there this AM to see what is left (and change the light bulb).

Jason, you have quite the list of new plants for the garden. And so many roses. Your yard is going to look even more smashing. But only one daylily? How could that be? Surely no one can resist those daylilies LOL!

I have been trying to make an effort to add NON daylilies! I wanted to add a little variety so this weekend I went to a Botanical Garden plant sale and got Black Gamecock -Louisiana Iris, Chocolate-Sedum, a pink balloon flower, Leather Leaf Sedge grass, a white anemone, and going to try some lupines again. But did buy a couple daylilies online-Spacecoast Friki Tiki, and Crystelle's Love.

We've decided that fall planting is generally safer here in Houston. So aside from some zinnias, dianthus, vegetables, and herbs, there's nothing new for the spring.

In the fall probably some amaryllis (hippeastrum) and daylilies. I just got my voucher from AHS, so I'd be a fool not to use it.

Rita - I used to grow roses before but I had a run in with aphids and they drove me to the brink of insanity. I was so fed up that I dug up all my roses and got rid of them. Then I moved.......haha This house had roses so I thought, okay, we'll try this again. Not one aphid last summer. I realize I may have to fight with them again at some point but I've learned from other people that I need to be patient and wait it out. A winter can do wonders and just because they are bad one year, it doesn't mean they will be bad every year. I love roses so I thought, what the heck, I'll go for it again!
P.S. Yes I know, I've only bought one daylily so far, isn't that awful?!?! However I have 3 orders in for them and they should all be in sometime this month.

Well I ended up getting that other clematis this afternoon afterall. I had a trellis in a small garden that had nothing growing on it so it looked too bare. Now it will have the clematis "Little Duckling" to make it look better!

A lot more than I planned on.....LOL

I started out saying to myself "only a few new daylilies this year that are specifically for hybridizing goals"

I won the following from Keith Miner on the auctions:

Then in Jan. I went to MWS and the auctions gave the chance for huge bargains on plants by hybridizers that I've wanted to have something from for several years. I won:

Berry - You sound exactly like me! Every year I always say.....just a few more........and every year I do get a few more......A FEW DOZEN MORE!!!

Since I started this thread I got another iris....Orange Caper.....an Autumn Crocus.....and now I'm on the hunt for 2 more roses (Just Joey and Tropicana).....Does it ever end?......Me thinks not!

Ed is amazing with only 8 new ones! LOL Maybe because I'm newer I feel like there are so many to collect, but I am proud that I've gotten choosier.

I also got "Snake in the Grass Boo" and Lemon Parchment and Primal Scream(I'd forgotten, then it arrived in the mail. LOve that!! LOL)

and I picked up Champagne Bubbles Poppy 2 days ago while looking for filler material at a nursery (usually ipomeoa vines)

I am so excited to try new things so I felt like I got the light bulb over my head and thought "Exchanges:then I won't really have to spend more than just postage." But I'm laughing b/c many of the posts I checked out had a note on their page saying "NO DAYLILY or hosta offers, please" I guess people either love or hate daylilies.

I only have room in shade, so I got 1 hosta, 2 astilbes and 1 new fern to try (I found out that the fern we had is rather agressive). There should have been one perennial I'm hunting for for the third time!, but I didn't get it again.
And the rest is daylilies, about 15.
Now if we could afford to cut down a big tree I would have more sunny room..

I wasn't planning on adding more daylilies until fall-but I bought a couple at the Lily auction-Lilac Avenue and Concrete Empire-I lucked out and got them MUCH cheaper than I could have purchased elsewhere. Also found Pomegranate Yarrow to add to my non daylily collection.

Yesterday I added 3 irises....Raspberry Blush, Delirium and Jump Start along with a Chinese Pagoda Primrose for my shade garden and today I got the daylily Double Red Royal. Oh and I almost forgot, also got a hanging basket full of pink petunias and 2 patio tomato (Better Bush) planters.
