Joe, I have tested it many times, anecdotally- I walk on many lawns that are mowed very low and they are not nearly as well anchored as grass mowed to a higher height- even with the same types of sprinkling systems (most installers use about the same water rates, I believe). This is especially apparent in early spring when a shallow root system is easy to be heaved by the frost of winter and becomes noticably loose after thaw. When I got into this business I read a lot of old orchard managment books and in hort-school studied lawn maintanance issues, and while the memory can do funny things I'm pretty sure that as grass grows up it grows down- not just for water but also nutrients. The only way you stop this pattern somewhat is if you use excess N and supply plenty of water. I have also frequently tried to establish trees in meadows mowed only once or twice a year and peaches in particular have a very hard time getting established in this set-up compared to frequently mowed grass. The weed-free mulched rings must be much wider because the tall weeds suck out so much more moisture. However, I think you make a good point, if there are as few evaporative days as we had in June and July there may not be a whole lot of gain having higher grass, but you have to think that a more extensive root system of grasses would have to slow tree uptake of water to some degree. All that said, I will admit to being no expert on lawns and welcome any research or anecdotally based contradictions to my thoughtful, but mostly from memory and observation BS.

Wow, it's a small world (or internet in this case). I don't keep up with the conifer forum as well as I do some of the other forums, so I didn't realize this thread was a spin off of another one, but it's still a good idea to have the link to the above article as a reference for any future searches. I agree with Ken, that frequent replanting would go a long way towards solving the issues relating to soil decomposition, except for four things. First, even if you change your soil every other year, most soils will still have some drainage deterioration towards the end of the two year period. Second, if you use your old soil and mix it back in as many people do, that has the potential to cause problems. Third, it's good for everyone to understand how drainage works so that they are better able to decide what ingredients are best for particular plants or circumstances. Different species have different moisture and drainage requirements, and different circumstances (climate, amount of supplemental watering available, etc) require adjustment. Fourth, and maybe most importantly, many people (we know who we are) won't replant frequently enough even though this would be best. As for drainage, as it applies to container culture, being vastly different from drainage, as it applies to in-ground plantings, I'm not so sure. The physics is the same! Only the variable, or circumstances, change. A true understanding of one is a true understanding of both.

I'm having the same concern. I originally went to lumber liquidators and found a nice hand scraped strand bamboo flooring. I then went online and researched a load of companies. So far, I like Cali bamboo. My biggest concern was the formaldehyde in the products. Cali bamboo has little to no formaldehyde added in there product. I've read those same reviews about Morning star, but they were outdated. I was emailed a material safety data sheet on Morning Star brand, but no one could tell me how much formaldehyde content was in the morning star product. At the bottom of the sheet there was a disclaimer: "The information and data herein are believed to be accurate and have been compiled from sources deemed to be reliable. It is offered for your consideration, investigation and verification. Lumber Liquidators makes no warranty of any kind, express or implied, concerning the accuracy of completeness of the information and data herein. Lumber Liquidators will not be liable for claims relating to any party's use of or reliance on information and data contained herein regardless of whether it is claimed that the information and data are inaccurate, incomplete or otherwise misleading. It is incumbent upon the user to obtain the most up-to-date information". So I guess what they mean is that the info on the safety data sheet is BS. I'd like to know. Degradation of cellulose can be done by bacteria. Some strains are better at it than others. In fact, that's precisely how ruminants break down cellulose in their digestive tracts. (And, in fact, cellulose isn't broken down at all in the human digestive tract.) So you can be sure that if you put any ruminant manure on your compost, those bacteria will be there. Yes, many fungi are somewhat faster at it, but even with no fungi around, it's gonna happen anyway. In fact, the later stages of natural composting are largely fungal. To the extent that cellulose isn't completely broken down after composting is done, it will happen gradually in the soil after the compost is dug in.
