planting near septic tank/leach areas question
Comments (13)Beca, thanks for posting. I believe you need a more specialized forum to consult with regards to your garden. Xeriscaping seems to be far more suitable for your area. You need to find plants that do not require as much watering and obviously plants that can withstand very cold nights and very hot days. A little design tip of mine. I take a photo of the garden in question and I take it from the angle you see it the most. Like from your door or your window. Then I blow up this photo in a black and white photocopier. And then I start drawing directly on them. So for the area you need to block off from view, take a pencil and draw on paper blocks, squares, rectangles, columns, rounds and basically move them about on the photo until you are satisfied with the positions. These figures represent plants. Columns can be a trellis, post, vine, tree, rounds, squares, rectangles are hedges, grasses, etc.. and for the moment, forget about flowers. When you do figure out how to position the plants, it's time to go to your local nurseries to consult on suitable plants. Keep in mind, avoid trees because this is a septic tank area and roots can do a large amount of damage to pipes and tanks. Also keep in mind that in Arizona -- as I believe, you need plants that do not require watering - so this must be either cacti, agave, echeverias and other similar plants that get it's moisture from morning dew or mists. I do hope these are helpful tips for you....See MoreWater tank or Septic Tank?
Comments (19)The red light does look like a septic warning light. In my area (NC), the town sewer pump stations do not have a red light but any personal septic pumps do. I second the call to the health department. Does the MLS (if there was one) say septic or sewer? Your location might help because you might find people from your area that know exactly what that is....See MoreA quick question about a septic tank
Comments (2)Yeah. It was weird the real estate agent wouldn't comment that there was a septic system....See MoreSeptic tank plus holding tank?
Comments (20)Hi @Simplysherona, sorry if I sound patronizing, but I am afraid for you and want to ensure you get the very best advice you can before you purchase this property. Posting on Houzz is great to give you direction, but if you go into this transaction without knowing your options and risks from a local expert, you may pay for this for a long time. A holding tank may be perfectly adequate and the cost to pump it out regularly may be very reasonable, but until you have real information from people in your area, it's only a guess. You indicated there was a previous septic system. Do you have it in writing that the previous tank was removed and remediation was done properly? Have you talked to the neighbors and found out their experiences with the holding tank setup? So many questions need to be answered. I have totally been star struck with houses e.g. our first house, a 1880's shotgun, did not have a sink in the bathroom. I didn't notice that until after the purchase. Duh. In our 1940's second house, the washing machine drained into the back of the three acre property. That was all fine until Chicago winter set in, the drains froze and I had to manually start and stop the washer to haul water out until it drained. Who knew to ask these things before we bought? Certainly not us as we were young fixer uppers, struck by the possibilities of the house, not the as is. $$$$ duh. No one on Houzz can answer the questions you asked in your last post unless they inspect the property. Get real advice from local experts. You can never do too much due diligence. I want you to have a lovely lake house, not a nightmare....See Morehydroharold
