Husqvarna 55 Chain Saw

I have a Husky 55 that stopped working two weeks ago. It seems to be firing intermittently. I have replaced:

The "on/off" switch (the original tested good with an ohm meter but I changed it anyway).

The spark plug.

The coil.

No luck with any of those. It still seems to be firing intermittenly.

The new coil shows a short from the terminal for the "on/off" switch to the chassis. This seems wrong to me but the original was the same. Any idea if this is correct or if I could have gotten a bad replacement part?

It has a magneto ignition, the switch grounds the primary side killing the spark.Will it start with a spritz of gas in the intake?

I haven't had the chance to check. When the problem first appeared, two weekends ago, however I sprayed ether in the carb and it didn't even try to start. I'll try again when I get a chance either late in the week or the weekend. Thanks for the reply.

I agree with rcmoser 100%, that sharpening a chain properly to specs is a challenge and it take good lessons and observations to learn (once the specs are loss). 1. The use of bad angles could cause the chain to try and cut too much related to power or cut curved. 2. The paid pro fixed sharpener vs Dremel or file usually gets all right each sharpening with more chain lost. 3. The dremel and file offer more quality sharpening if you learn and respect angle guides and proper stones. 4. Since going to the dermel in 84, that is all I use with a careful eye until any damage is removed vs touchups. 5. Once I sharpen a bad chain, I test it to know I got the angles correct and expect cords of cln wood from it. 6. My goal is to inspect clean and repair during my downtime at home and only any minors away from home. 7. I try to limit serious cutting to a month with or behind tree trimmers in cool weather respecting air-cooled. Your saw might fetch $150.00 in good condition here, I don't know what prices are like in your area. The 450, 270 and 280 are not pro quality saws, they are designed for the occasional user/weekend warrior. What length bar do you want? The MS 260 would be a good choice but is limited to 20" and .325 chain. 3/8 can go on with an Oregon bar but the saw doesn't have the cajones to pull it. What about a Husky 359, a lot lighter than your current one but uses the same 3/8 chain. Good all around saw.

I have not worked on a Husky before but hopefully it is nearly the same as Stihl. You must make sure the chain brake is disengaged before trying to reinstall. To disengage the brake you must pull the chain brake handle back (toward you) as you would when you are going to cut. Otherwise you leave the brake engaged which makes it difficult to put the brake on. Think of it like trying to change the brakes on your car. If you don't compress the brake piston you can't get the caliper assembly onto the rotor. If the system is similar to Stihl, the spring will be stretched when the brake is disengaged. The spring will probably help braking by reducing the force necessary to engage the brake.

Chainsaw Wilbur appears to either be an idiot by birth or by deliberate attempt, at any rate, his blog offers nothing of value. Is his blog an attempt to act and speak the way he assumes that chainsaw users can relate to? The Kevin Kelly link is actually a testiomonial by someone going by the name of Charlie Brooks, not that it makes any difference because it`s obvious that Charlie doesn`t really know anything about saws either. I`ve owned and tested many saws including both the 353 and the ms280. If I were to buy one of the two today it would be the 353. Although it has slightly less power than the 280 it`s of minimal consequence in this comparison. The 353 is also noticably lighter and substantially cheaper. The fact that the 353 has a vertically split magnesium crankcase vs the horizontal clamshell design of the 280 is important to some however I don`t think it`s a big deal for this range of saw. Both saws have excellent air filtration, unlike many Stihls. The ms280 is a good example of Stihl`s most modern design features. Neither saw is excessivly loud or hard to start. One gripe that I have about the ms280 is that the anti-vibe is too flimsy. The felt vibes at the handles are low like those of a Husky, Jonsered, or some Dolmars, however the buffers are so soft that the saw feels as if the powerhead is moving around in the cut. I don`t like that feel at all. This is the primary shortcoming of the 280 IMO. In all honesty though, I think the average person would have significantly above average satisfaction from either of these saws.

Ether is very hard on two stroke engines, it washes the oil from the cylinder wall and dries the crank seals. Use gas, WD40 works too.

OK, I tried gasoline and it didn't try to start at all.

I'm really at a loss.

At this point it seems that the plug is sparking. I can remove the plug and ground it against the cylinder and see the spark when I pull the cord. It has to be dark to see the spark, however.

I may have to break down and take it to someone that knows what they are doing.

It could be a carb problem. When you pour gas down the cylinder to test it you have to hold it wide open when trying to start it. If you didn't put a new plug in, they will fire out of the but not when in when shot. Steve

I know this seems obvious to many, but if you are putting gas in it, make sure it is mixed 2 stroke. Even just a small amount of straight gas can reck a saw.

First off remove the spark plug then start at the off switch and remove the ground. Give it a pull while grounding the plug electrode to the cylinder and look for spark. If no spark check the air gap where the cdi module mounts over the flywheel. The air gap should be in the .010 to .015 range. A business card works for me. Put the card between the flywheel magnets and the cdi. Using the magnets to help keep the bolts aligned snug it up. Remove the card when your finished tightening and recheck for spark. Once you have spark move on to the carb. Remove the fuel line from the carb and roll it around with your finger tips looking for cracks or holes. Stretch the line good and look closely. If you have a hole then it needs replacing. Use a hook tool or bend a fish hook into a coat hanger and pull the fuel filter from the tank where you would normally fill it up at. Once you have the filter in your hand you can pull the entire fuel line straight out. Match the size and replace. If you are sure you have fuel and spark the next thing to check is compression. Your going to need a gauge. PSI needs to be over 100 to run.

P.S. When you get it to fire up make sure you pull the muffler and check the exhaust port where the exhaust comes out of the cylinder. Sometimes this port will fill up with carbon which stops the air flow through the engine.

chriskat, just a recent incident with my Stihl chainsaw. I had been cutting up a tree for firewood when I stopped to take a break... then the chainsaw would not start again. Took a quick trip down to the local hardware store and bought a new spark plug (Champion). Installed it and it fired up on the first pull. Just my experience.

I have a husky 55. In the middle of cutting it stopped and now it will not pull to start. Seems frozen. It smoked after it shut down. Is this saw finished?
