Have any of you seen this new book? There was a long article in the new issue of the AHS magazine about one of the authors. Evidently he was in charge of a large public rose garden in NY when they passed a law against using most of the chemicals he was having sprayed on the garden. So....he ripped out all of the rose bushes and started over again, with ones that didn't need spraying! It is an amazing story - of course, to my delight, many of the roses he replaced them with were old roses! Who would have thought?

No, I haven't seen or heard about this book. But the topic is really interesting to me, since I am gardening organically and don't spray for the sake of the environment. I will have a look and see if I can find it. Thank you for making me aware of it, Jackie.

Jeri, I am curious what you have to say about the issue of sustainable rose gardening in this book!

WinterCat, Thanks for the poem! I've never run across that one before, and it's beautiful as well as botanical. I'm moderately interested in the history of rose hybridization, and plant discovery and development in general, but the lives of the people who happened to get roses named after them as a rule leave me cold. I've never cared for celebrity gossip. And, perhaps because of a minimalist element in my aesthetic composition, I don't collect plant-themed objects, or anything else, except for the plants themselves, and books. But my goal, or dream, is a very large, very complex garden filled with a tremendous variety of plants all in the place that's right for them. Much as I love both literature and gardening, I don't find a great deal of connection between them. Maybe it's like, oh, kittens: they're absolutely delightful in real life, but perhaps too charming to make good subjects for artistic interpretation. For years I've had a vague idea in the back of my mind of a garden poem, long, full, complex, rich, beautiful, like the garden of my dreams. I'm not going to write the poem, as I'm not a poet, and I haven't found that anyone else has written it, though I don't read much poetry, either. I don't believe that Dickens, that pre-eminently urban author, is commonly regarded as a notable writer of landscape description, but have recently become conscious of his sensitivity to the beauty of the countryside and his ability to describe it. From Nicholas Nickleby: [after a night of drinking and riot, ending in a quarrel] "They...emerged upon the open road,... Fields, trees, gardens, hedges, everything looked very beautiful; the young man scarcely seemed to have noticed them before, though he had passed the same objects a thousand times. There was a peace and serenity upon them all strangely at variance with the bewilderment and confusion of his own half-sobered thoughts, and yet impressive and welcome." And from Bleak House: [on a trip to visit a friend in the country] "It was delightful weather. jim1961, Thanks for posting that 2010 NYBG link. I've posted it in these forums before so you know that I'm aware of the list. The thing about that list is that I don't know whether it is a report judging the performance ONLY that year OR the performance as long as they had been in the garden up to and including that year. The implication is that it is just for that year. And we know that one year doesn't tell us about long term performance. I'm hoping that the book's list is based on longer term observations. And although I always remind myself and others that making an assumption isn't a good thing, I will say that if I were the author that I wouldn't risk my reputation using short term observations.

When I lived in that area I would recommend the Ortho book on growing roses. Sunset has one too but I liked the Ortho book better. Don't remember why. The Sunset book would be very area-appropriate at least, with no confusing info on unnecessary stuff like winterizing and blackspot and japanese beetle. Some people do get insulted by the "for Dummies" titles. Guess they don't realize it's a very popular series. My aunt went off on my uncle (her brother) when she asked for a basic computer book and he gave her the 'for Dummies' one. Total temper tantrum. I glanced at the new Better Homes book when it came out. I saw that it's recommending diazinon for things like midges, even though diazinon was removed from the market by the EPA, some years ago. Anyone know what's up with that?? has diazinon been rehabilitated, or what? I've been not recommending it because of that.

Hi Sharon, Just wanted to add another welcome to New England. My mom lived in Peabody until last year, and I used to live in Peabody, but that was another lifetime ago. It's a nice town. Now I live a little further south and west of you. You will get snow. My mom always used to get snow whenever we did, just a little less, because of your proximity to the coast. I grew up here, but I did buy the Northeast Gardening book by Sunset. I guess it's an ok book, I don't know why I bought it. A compulsion to buy books, I guess. :-) There is nothing like actual experience, and I have gardened and lived here all my life, so I can't really say if the info in there will be useful to someone from Calif. But just wanted to let you know that there is a Sunset gardening book for the Northeast, and it's a big thick book. Besides all the other stuff people have mentioned, I would recommend that you get a good book about New England wildflowers, if that interests you. (I have one, but unfortunately I can't put my hands on it right this second, so I can't tell you the title, but I'll keep looking for it) There are a lot of wildflowers and spring ephemerals that show up briefly in the spring along with the early bulbs that help make spring a joy after all the cold and snow. You don't want to pull one thinking it's a weed. Some ARE weeds, but others like bloodroot and jack-in-the-pulpit, are great to have. If I were you I would wait to order bulbs and see what you may already have in the spring. All the foliage from daffs and tulips and crocuses has died back, so like others have said, you may not know what else you have. Oh BTW, the fall foliage is a real treat. Just wait a few weeks. You don't have to go anywhere special to see it. Just drive or walk anywhere and you will see some gorgeous fall colors. Keep coming here to GW too, it will keep you sane in the winter. Alison

I have the book and have really enjoyed it. It is nice to see the American Rose Society giving time and print to growing roses without chemicals. Many of us have, or are trying, to cut back or eliminate fungicide and/or insecticide sprays and appreciate any tips and ideas possible. Thanks for your fine articles Jeri.

Is this an expanded edition of the book with the exact same title published in 2008 by the Manhattan Rose Society, edited by Pat Shanley and Peter Kukielski? I bought that one when it first came out.

Don't have it, but it looks like a very cool book. Dan Mills is a member of my local rose society and John Starnes gardens in Tampa.

Karen - The article I mentioned should have been in the American Rose Society magazine, but it was not - it was the magazine of AHS (the American Horticultural Society) - I think it is called The American Gardener.

At almost the same time as my AHS magazine arrived I did get my ARS magazine in the mail, and it had an amazing article in it - well written by an exhibitor - all about how to compete in exhibiting roses, how to grow them (with pictures of standing rows of roses - no garden), how to spray what poison, how often, how they need meticulous constant attention, etc. etc.

It was quite an amazing contrast - seemed as if it was the future of rose growing vs the past - guess which side the ARS was on? The sad part to me is that if anyone who was thinking about growing roses picked up the ARS magazine, they would STILL get the impression that roses are difficult & time consuming to grow, and also hurt the environment. How can this possibly help the ARS's stated goal to get more people to grow roses? It is quite ironic that the wonderful article about how an entire public rose garden was changed over to sustainable rose growing, with great success, had to be published by the American Horticultural Society.

If you go looking for it, be aware that there are two different editions. An earlier version was sold at the HRF conference at the Hearst Castle some years ago. The current and newer edition is about twice as long. (I have both.)

The book is comprised of a series of articles by a number of writers.

Rosefolly, mine is from 2010 and says it is the expanded version on the dust jacket (no info in side but it starts with a color photo section before the actual book pages)

I take it mine is the expanded version or is that an ad for the expanded one?

Mine was published 2010. I didn't know of an earlier version, but I have articles in this one.

The 2010 version is the current one. The earlier edition was published in 2008 by the Manhattan Rose Society and was only 94 pages long. It had the same picture on the cover and had two of the three current editors. I kept the earlier edition as a curiosity, but there is much more content in the 2010 edition.

I do like collecting garden books, rose books particularly but other topics as well. I do wonder what will happen to my personal library when I am not here to use it anymore. Let us hope that day is far off into the distant future. Book collections, like gardens, rarely survive their creators.

The book sounds wonderful----Paula --I know what you mean about a collection of rose books---I have many and love them all----My collections (which are many and varied)are running us out of the house----LOL I feel sorry for my children when they have to dispose of all these "treasures"
