Plum choices, Satsuma, Superior, Purple Heart?
Comments (22)Satsuma is red-fleshed like Methely. It doesn't have as thick a skin as Methely. Once Methely is fully ripe it's really pretty flat tasting where as Satsuma maintains its quality better, even when completely ripe. Methely requires more thinning as it tends to set a crazy amount of fruit in grape-like clusters. If black knot is an issue Methely is the ultimate incubator of this disease. These plums are not really competitors because they ripen at different times, although there is some overlap with Shiro on the early side of Satsuma and late side of Methely. Methely is the earliest plum I grow which is the main reason I still stock it in my nursery but the black-knot issue is a big problem. Shiro tends to crack more than the other two when rain comes close to harvest, has yellow flesh and skin and is somehow not very interesting. When properly thinned and yellow-ripe it is sweet, juicy and quite enjoyable, however. In my own orchard I'm phasing out Shiro and possibly Methely. I prefer the flavor of Erli-majic, which begins ripening just after Methely and will get me through to Santa Rosa. Both of these have superior fruit to Methely and Shiro, IMO, that doesn't tend to crack. I'm tired of fighting Methely's black knot and Shiro's cracking....See Morehow to properly prune a purple leaf plum
Comments (28)The undesirability of purple leaved plums is, as with many other plants, dependent on where you are growing them. They are trouble free and healthy ornamentals in some climates. Here they provide some of the earliest spring blossom, long before the cherries and crab apples and then provide blemish free purple foliage throughout the summer. I've just found a seedling on my allotment from the towering specimen in a neighbouring garden. I was interested to find a babe with dark purple foliage as I suspected they would more likely be green. I'm deciding where to transplant it to....See MoreKrauter Vesuvius Plum or Thundercloud Plum or Purple Pony Plum?
Comments (3)I'm surprised you haven't gotten any responses to your inquiry yet - purple leaf plums tend to generate almost as many comments as Bradford pears :-) If I was choosing a small tree for my front yard, a purple leaf plum - ANY purple leaf plum - would not be among my choices. Here they are ubiquitous - the first choice of developers "landscaping" new housing communities primarily because they are cheap and relatively fast growing. But like many other members of the Prunus family, they are extremely prone to disease and insect problems, tend to sucker profusely and are short lived. If you are interested in the dark foliage color, I'd consider something like Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' or a Japanese maple selection like 'Bloodgood' or 'Emperor 1'....See MorePurple Plum = Black Plum? Any good?
Comments (6)Paul, the best thing for you to do is to grow Black Plum and your Purple PLum at the sane time in the same season and see if you see any differences. I've grown Black Plum and it is a very dark color, and even more so when grown in southern areas. Purple means pink to many folks and purple was the word used to describe pink fruits years ago starting in the late 1800's, as in Prudens Purple, which is Pink, Eva Purple Ball, which is pink, and many more. So do try comparing the two under the same conditions. Carolyn...See Moresvtterminator
