Mark Your Calendars ... 4th Annual Virginia GW Gathering

It's BACK!! This has become a regular spring 'thing' here. I thought about discontinuing it because of all I have going on right now, but I'd be seriously disappointed if I didn't get to pow-wow with my fellow rose nuts each spring.

Make plans to come to the garden, eat food, and visit with your fellow rose lovers. We always have SO much fun, visiting and putting faces to names and GW-IDs.

The roses are leafing out fast and furious, with our weird warm spring weather last week. I expect that they'll put on quite a show once blooming starts.

My total packet bet is 7979.43 by the law of average, should be right on the button. Now while we wait can we talk about my poor pumpkin seeds that were so fresh when I sent them, I mean I was still turning them every hour in the sun coming thru my french doors,before bagging them. Anyway, today, to my horror, the Musque de Provence seeds were moldy green!!!!I did not figure tha tthe time from when I packed them and the time we will get our seeds back would be enough to mold them, as I din't want to treat them with chemicals or bleach but maybe I should have!!! Looked on line for answers , someone mentioned rinsing the seeds in hydrogen peroxide before drying them. I panicked and use what was close at hand , put some bleach in water and filled the little baggie with it and slooshed them around until they cleaned up a bit, then i rinsed them further with my fingers, and planted them in a peat pot to see about germination. I don't know what to tell you. It's really sad to loose these, they were beautiful pumpkins, of the brightest orange flesh. If they are really lost then I will have to make sure mine grows and distribute the seeds again thru another swap.I am so sorry about that, thought i was doing the seeds a favor by not using bleach or other chemicals...and look what happened. Goodmorning Everybody ! :) I heard from my swappers last night...:))) Mariann I have a couple of surprizes for you...We love putting surprizes in our boxes Regina started it.. Chell you are so creative and your writing is so much fun to read... I bet the boys loved playing pirate.. I can see their smiling faces now...What a great idea to make a hideout.. They will always remeber their hideout mom made for them... Norma I havent traded with you but I am sure you went way above in sending her nice cuttings..I seen pics of what you send...They are awesome boxes..:)) Please dont be sad..:)) Regina howdy :) I am so sorry about Mark having to have surgery and the heart condition would just send me into heaven.. Wow I am so glad to read it all went well...Shooo My heart sank for a minute...He will be all healed for college this fall..:)) You empty nester dont go through what I went through...Stay busy and call them alot... I miss my kids so much it hurts sometimes... Dogs are okay but they cant replace our true babies...I love reading about chell and her boys... It makes me smile so much... Hi there- I do hope all of the seeds have found their way home to you all- I did send a few of my this seasons favorites to you all (or tried to get them all in the return envelopes)- I thought I would show you a few pics- The very best Castor Bean I have ever grown is the New Zealand Purple. It was quite something to behold- over 10' tall and near the end of the season- the side branches were more that 8' across- and bronze and purple all the way through- The leaves had a sheen to them that shifted shades of the color as you looked at it. Many folks came down the driveway to ask about it... The aristolachia fimbriata has been a favorite of mine since my first participation in the RUNV exchange- Aristolochia Fimbriata, the White Veined Hardy Dutchman's Pipe, is an excellent hanging basket plant. Its small stem, make it more suitable than other Aristolochia for basket culture. This smaller tropical vine climbs to only 1-2 meters. It is native to Argentina, Paraguay and Southern Brazil. A rare find. A must for those who collect the unusual. It always attracts the attention by the strange flowers that are produced amongst the white-veined leaves. Flowers are solitary and are formed under the leaves. The cute little 1-2" long yellow and brown flowers, resembling miniature elephant trunks, are produced along the stem all Summer. The flowers are green on the tube, brown on the mouth entrance and veined purple brown inside. The mouth entrance has a bizzare and striking arrangement of hairs that stick out like a rough material. This is one of the most attractive foliage plants you can grow. This really cool deciduous groundcover Dutchman's Pipe spreads out to 3 feet on little green stems. Each rounded leaf is medium green, highlighted with dramatic silver veining. In Winter, the stems retreat back to the base if cultivated outside, so no invasive problems. Hardiness zones 7-9, (-15C/5Â°F,-5Â°C/25Â°F) in Winter. Aristolochia Fimbriata likes to grow in a light and airy place, but not in direct sunlight. Keep Summer temperatures from 68-78Â°F and Winter temperatures above 50Â°F. Water regularly during the growth period, once or twice a week. Water no more than once a week during Winter. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every third watering throughout the growing season. It grows best in rich, well-drained soil. That said- I put it in hanging baskets and forgot to water way too many times- and I almost never fertilize- and they still did great!! I bring mine in to overwinter- and they live through our long cold winters in the basement with hardly any light... Germinating tips- Soak 48 hours in hand hot water Time to germinate: 30-90 days (The usual time period in which a particular variety will germinate given optimum conditions) Temperature: 70-80Â°F (24-29Â°C) - a steady temperature is generally recommended - fluctuating temperatures can damage a seedling in its critical early stages Growth Medium: Peaty Sowing Depth: Sow on the surface, point end down and do not cover Light or Dark: No special requirements Slow or Erratic: Not all seeds will show at once - prick out each seedling as it becomes large enough to handle and don't discard the container until well over the time suggested. The Morning Glory Wine and Roses (Heirloom Ipomoea Nil I found both on the web...), is the best ever performing MG I have ever tried! And the Triple Yellow Datura, var chlorantha- Well, you will find that all over the web- I do hope all have made their way home by now- and am very happy to have been able to host this swap- Thanks again- Julie

Its reading posts like this that makes me envious that I don't live closer to all of you....if I did, I'd be there in a heartbeat! I want to meet you all so badly and see your gardens. Every year when I hear about these get-togethers of rose folks I want to hop on a bus and head down there. But with a full-time job of taking care of Mom and my lst grandbaby coming right about that time, I will have to resist the impulse. I hope you all post pictures for those of us who will be there in spirit. Have fun!

It's WONDERFUL to see so many familiar faces eager to get together in June!!

I know there are a lot more rose growers here within driving distance. (catsrose is coming 3+ hours to be here) New people are encouraged to attend, and warmly welcomed upon arrival. There's nothing quite like making real flesh-and-blood friends out of your cyber friends. I have found quite a few keepers this way.

Last year folks stopped at my garden on the way to Connie's. We're about an hour apart. I talked to Connie about offering that option again this year, and she thought it would be great...so here it is.

I will forgo Philadelphia to be with a lot of so many rose friends. Hopefully, I can hitch a ride with friends, if they promise to go to Robert's garden as well. See you all there. Can't wait to see the two gardens.

Hi, Stephanie! It was great to see you at Tufton today.

Fruit sounds fabulous. No one has mentioned what they're bringing yet. We usually leave it open, and we always have a great variety. I'm thinking chicken salad for me ... and tea and lemonade, and maybe sangria.

Tomorrow is the Day!!!

By my count, it looks like we'll have about 12 - 15 people here. The storm last night flattened the party tent. If we can't get it back up, we'll put the party in the pavillion under the pecan tree.

There's still time for anyone within commuting distance to change their mind and decide to come. Shoot me an email through My Page on GW and I'll give you directions. I'm excited that we have a couple of new-comers this year!

If you've wanted to see my garden in person, and meet lots of wonderful GW folks, this is an opportunity to do so.
