What has the weather been like? A frost? A heat wave? Heavy rain?

Did you fertilize heavily recently? Do you see any evidence of voles or gophers? How is the drainage in the area?

We need to know a little more in order to help.

Are the leaves dried and crumbly when you touch them? If you've had any frosts or freezes that would do it. Especially that leaf curling. I've had a few freeze nights and some of my roses are showing those same symptoms.

NJ. We have had wild temp swings, especially in the northwestern part of the state. Not much rain. Could be frost damage, could need water, but need photos.

Where in NJ are you? this might be weather related. As the plant been fertilized? Has it been watered (the soil looks dry)? anything else you can tell us?

been using round-up? looks a little like herbicide damage to me.

Thanks a lot for posting the photo for me! I uploaded two photos to Flickr, and the other one shows a worse situation.

I planted this Marry Rose last year in Feb. It did well; had good bloom last year. This year, so far all other roses are doing fine in my garden; lots of healthy leaves. Only this one looks sick. So I think weather is not the reason. And I give all my roses the same treatment. I have not fertilized my roses, just a light trimming in this Feb. I think the curling and turning yellow is getting worse...

See if you can move the plant, it could have heaved durng the winter or a critter might be digging things up. Also check on the herbicide use as campanula suggested, even if not in your yard.

I didn't get a clear answer on watering.

You know, it looks like a dog peed on it.

Check the soil, if it is soggy stop watering, if it is dry water water, if it is moist, relax.

At this point pay more attention to the canes (stems) than the foliage. If the canes look okay, wait until weather improves and look for new growth. 'Mary Rose' is a tough old bird, she'll likely be okay.

You know what? Those leaves look REALLY chlorotic. Is this particular plant possibly in a more alkaline environment than your others?

Mary Tudor was the sister of King Henry the 8th. If Henry really loved ANYONE, it was his sister, who was, briefly, Queen of France.

So, Henry built this huge, gaudy warship, constructed between 1509 and 1511, and he named it for his sister: The Mary Rose. Then, it sank.

The sunken hull was found and raised in the 20th Century, and study of it continues, under The Mary Rose Trust. When Austin released this rose, he named it to honor and benefit the Mary Rose Trust.

Today's reminder that roses and human history are closely intertwined.

BIG THUNDER STARTING HERE! WOW!

The top growth on that looks fine. It seems to be confined to just the one branch so it could have been earlier frost damage or even animal damage. You can not go by all the other roses in your garden. Each planting location is different and each rose is different and will react in a different manner to weather conditions. That's a very young rose and it may have just caught the wind in the right direction for that one branch to have been frozen. Or, like hoov said, a dog may have peed on it. In any case I'd just remove those damaged leaves and watch and see how the new ones grow out. If it continues to show decline in other parts of the rose than there is probably more going on but if that cane regrows healthy leaves it's probably just a one time event.

We examined the rose leaves carefully, then we found these insects - are they aphids? Tomorrow I am going to get some soapy water to spray the rose. Two new photos are here:

I have not water my roses as often as I should. Sometimes I did not water them at all if it was already dark after work...

Those are aphids, but they didn't cause yellowing of or curling of the leaves. I had a mini rose indoors a couple months ago that, left unattented, became COVERED with aphids. And I mean COATED, wish I'd taken a picture. I squished them all, rinsed the plant and its none the worse for wear. You don't need to use soapy water, as long as they get knocked off the bush they'll die. And they don't hang on very tight. If I had a favroite garden pest, it'd be aphids. They are soooo fun to squish, or easy to knock off with the hose! LOL

In the second photo, the leaflet on the left looks like it was chewed by deer. I have a bunch of roses that look like that right now.

Rose Slugs are even better, tho, because they POP! when you squish them!

I think it is not likely that the rose was chewed by deer or other animals. Because the garden is surrounded by a fence of 6 feet. I also never used round-up in the garden. Yesterday, we removed the sick canes and leaves, then watered the rose well. Today, I plan to give all my roses some fertilizer. Hopefully, this Mary Rose will cover...
