What would I need to heat a small greenhouse in Zone 5-6?

Would an 85,000 BTU be sufficient to heat a 12'x8' greenhouse in Zone 5-6? How many degrees celcius would a heater like that working at full blast add to ambient temp?

Does anyone know how much it might cost to run a heater like that every night for a month?

You will need around 15000 btu the 85000 btu is WAAAAaaaaay too big.

One way to know if a site is relatively warm (has a longer growing season with fewer killing frosts) is to look for land in mid-fall when you can compare how far along native trees are towards dormancy. Best fruit growing areas are often known in the East and will already have established orchards. People have been growing fruit here for 300 years but you might luck out, I guess, and discover your own tiny "banana belt". As far as productivity- of course you will be able to grow a wider range of varieties in a 6 than a 5 and some would yield more with a longer season- at least over time. But your question really seems to be can you find a Z6 in regions that are predominantly 5. I think it's the leeward (southeast) side of large bodies of water that have moderated temps as in far upstate NY, not far from Buffalo and areas like Lake Geneva. Also along rivers such as the Hudson Valley and running up the Housatonic in CT. Some of the fruit you listed, like cold-hardy figs and Jap persimmons aren't going to work for you, even in a Z6 without protection.

engineeredgarden, I have been through your neighborhood, enjoying that zone 7 weather. Amazing anything grows in that nasty red dirt down there. I would bore you with tales of the ice and snow that I suffer, but have seen pictures of the snow you got this February. It is amazing how insidious that cold air can be, how it creeps through the smallest of holes and clutches plants in a stranglehold. I appreciate your offer to assist with my build! After seeing your power auger invention, you certainly have the technical genius combined with no fear to tackle any challenge. Pretty sure that I can build the heavily insulated structure with only a south wall exposed to sunlight with multi-wall polycarbonate or double layer bubble wrap. I am not quite sure if I can work out the thermo switch to kick on a fan to blow hot air outside, or to pull cold air inside. Do you know a source? dan_staley, even if I set my tomatoes out in early April, my soil temperatures are still 48 to 50 degrees. I am considering soil heat cables with a water wall above. Will experiment this way in addition to building the mini greenhouse for my self-watering buckets. Thanks for your input!

Fruitnut! First off, welcome back and what a beautiful tree you have there. Is that tree planted in the ground? It's amazing, from my whole family. I have a 8 x 16 and my calculations state I need a 20K BTU heater.

The size of the heater depends on a lot of factors not just square feet. Follow the link I provided below and find what you need for a BTU's

I use a 150,000 BTU output heater for a 30 X 48. My 80,000 BTU output (100,000 rated input) heater can generally keep up a 20 to 25ÂºF increase over outside temp in another (30 X 60) ghs but needs help when it gets colder (a second same sized heater kicks in as needed).
I have also used one of those Mr. Heater radiant models that sit on top of the propane tank. I use it in my 20 X 48 hoop house when the temps get really low. I usually set it at the lowest setting (8,000 BTU?) it about 10ÂºF above outside temp. I can usually get two nights worth of heat from the 20lb tank at that setting.

Make sure to buy a heater by the output rating not the listed rating which is the input.

Thanks for the link. I've been looking for portable propane heaters with auto start and thermostatic control. I could probably save a little on propane with one of those.

I use a sm. milk house heater -1300-`1500 in a house that is 10x13. I get all the heat I need. Sun comes out it can get to 100 if I don't open doors and vents.
