Rose of Sharon blossoms aren't great this year

lilgreenfrog

Last year we put in a Blue Satin RoS. We almost killed it before we got it planted, but it did bloom, and its flowers were glorious.

This year it's grown about 3 feet, but its blossoms aren't great; the petals are narrow (i.e. don't touch one another), the blossoms don't seem to open all the way, and, while it's covered in buds, it only opens one or two at a time.

Last year we ignored it except for watering. I'm wondering if I should have fertilized this year? Or upped the water, since it's much bigger now? The plant is otherwise healthy, with dark leaves and no bugs.

What gives?

Thanks!

Lara
