What do the symbols on a soil map mean?

I finally, after much research, found a soil map of my township. Unfortunately, the map did not have a key to explain what the symbols meant.

If anyone here would know, I thank you in advance for what you can tell me.

My entire property is classified Pa , it is bordered on the east by EmA and on the west by MrB. Any ideas? BTW this is in SW Ohio.

SW Ohio is a big area. I would need to know what county to get the answer to your question.

That would be Greene County, Beavercreek Township.

pinktoes I would suggest writing words next to the symbol on the plan to describe what it is (chandelier, flush mount, or semi flush mount) and the weight load of the fixture if that is a special consideration. Most plans I have seen use a circle to identify a ceiling fixture. remember - the person installing this fixture is not going to know what these symbols mean either - hopefully they can read (that is not a given by the way). Typically switches are marked with a dollar sign ($ for single pole, 3$ for 3 way and 4$ for 4 way). Outlets are marked with the small circle with two lines sticking out. If it is a special outlet (half hot, 220 volt, or special outlet for applianxes - that should be spelled out on the plan in words. I also suggest that you number every fixture and write that on the plan next to the symbol. I used the letter F followed by the fixture number (e.g. F26 is my dog room fixture - scary - I remember all the numbers and where they go!). Once you number each, then you can can make a spread sheet (or just write it down on tablet paper) with the fixture number, the name of the fixture, where it goes, and quantity. This little sheet will become very important when you go to order - so you can do inventory - and more importantly so the electrician knows where to install it. Just think of this as preparing a food shopping list for your DH. If you don't spell it out carefully - as if a child were doing the shopping - who knows what type of food he will bring home. Prepare a list - cross check the numbers on the list with what is on the plan - then write important words on the plan - and maybe - just maybe - the electrician who is putting these up will get it correct.

Glad other folks don't go strictly by the "soil worked" statement. zeedman, I'm actually over 100 miles south of you. I'm pretty close to the bottom of Lake Michigan- I probably should have said so in my first post. So I'm not sure if that will make a difference or not with timing. And not anything to do with the conversation at hand, but I miss camping at High Cliff. forgotten- I didn't realize I could sprout my peas. I figured since they aren't supposed to like transplanting, that meant I couldn't sprout them either. I am so going to do this with some of my peas this year. How long do they take to sprout? I would be doing them in my 65 degreeish dining room where I have south facing windows for a little extra warm if the sun ever comes out again, lol. farmerdill- I didn't realize there were smooth and wrinkley peas. All of mine look kind of smooth like the Alaskas, so I think maybe I'm good with adverse conditions peas. My beds are pretty good draining- a mix of horse compost, leaves and grass clippings, and sandy loam that gets stirred up every spring, and put to bed with another layer of leaves in the fall. Some are raised beds, and others are lasagne beds, kind of like raised beds without the outside box because I heap them in deep.

Fruitnut, to clarify, I can add the aged chicken manure liberally when I plant new BBs in that location, and that will provide everything needed? If I want more growth, I can then fool around with supplements like urea or appropriate chemical fertilizers. Can I add aged chicken manure as a top dressing fertilizer anytime to established plants? I actualy planted a test SHB there with a shovel full of the chicken manure and another shovel of peatmoss. It really exploded and was looking great. So great it got stolen. The other 4 REs I planted there with only peatmoss and regular weak AmoniaNitrate feedings. I guess I can add some manure on top of them?

I'm finding a MrB ( Miamian-ââââUrban land complex, rolling) and a EmA ( Eldean silt loam, 2 to 6 percent slopes). No sign of a Pa yet. Sometimes the symbols appear on the map such that other background lines confuse things, any chance the map symbol is a Ra or a Pg?

I went to the site you gave. On entering the site I get a county wide map and then turn on the township layer. I can zoom the township but I can't get the soil mapping to turn on.

I'm working from a national soil data base. Linked below is a part of the mapping in the south end of Beavercreek Township. Can you tell if you are on the photo or north,south, east, west of it?

My location is due west of the small town of Alpha in that photo. About 3 miles or so. Alpha is 'downstream', I know that the Beaver Creek makes a turn to the south just before it gets to Alpha. Beaver Creek is about 250 yds north of my location. Very near the intersection of US 35 and I 675.

I couln't get the map to work properly from the link either. :>(

Gee, I knew my soil was heavy and poorly drained. But, WOW, that is really bad news. Thankfully, I have an unlimited amount of free horse manure available. Good thing I like to dig and mix soils.

The high water table does dictate the need for raised beds, but there is a lot of good features to that soil. More detailed info shows the clay in Pa soils to be about 9%, and the soil has a relatively high CEC.

I would recommend amending with a small amount of sand, some mica in the form of vermiculite, and organics to suit. It should be a great soil for general gardening.

I intend to plant moisture loving plants (annual ornamentals such as canna) in the lower downgrade/wetter portions of the property. On the higher grade will be some limited vegetables. I have occaisonal ponding, only during torrential rains of several inches.

Contact your county soil and water conservation district. Mine (I am in southeast Ohio) tells me some of the soil maps are not accurate because they do not take into account all the strip mining we had around here. I don't think Greene had that much stripping, but could be wrong. But your SWCD is a good place to ask questions about your particlar ground. You county extension might be helpful on platings.
