I would wait a bit, until everything emerges. Get some sticks to mark locations as they pop out, then shrivel up.
Wait until after bloom times, THEN dig and move. Rearrange to suit your new plan. Better yet would be waiting until early fall to dig up, but daffs and bleeding heart, could be dormant by then, harder to find. You could add crocus too, for earlier bloom color.

Don't feel bad, it happens when you add stuff. Now your daffs will bloom AFTER the neighbors are done, last longer! My daffs often are up later, when moved in the fall, than those left alone. Even the early bloomers come up later.

I agree - wait until everything comes up enough so that you're sure of what is where - it may not be as bad as you think!

My daffs are always yellow when they start to poke their heads out of the soil....

Don't worry! I did a lot of the same thing when I began my garden, and I got upset over it too, but none of it is permanent. It's all moveable.

I still haven't gotten around to moving the red tulips I accidentally put in my pink-and-yellow bed ...

Don't be upset - it's fixable.

I have moved fully bloomed daffs in the spring - made sure the new hole was dug first - gave them a good rootball and slipped them right into the new hole. Everthing is movable if you do it this spring - you'll be okay

Your neighbors' daffodils may be up now because they may have planted an earlier-blooming variety.

I would wait and see how things go. If you want to move things later, I'm thinking that a fork used very gently in a *really* wide circle around the whole group would be the way to go.

If you didn't see the bleeding heart roots when you planted the daffs, you're probably okay. Hostas and bleeding hearts are both pretty tough plants. They should survive any move just fine. The bulbs you will need to watch out for a bit more, because you don't want to cuth them open when digging.

If it were me, I'd wait, see what things look like, and again, dig a really wide hole if I wanted to move things later. And relax and enjoy the garden as is for now. It will work out one way or the other.

Daffodils need to be planted in an area with more sun than Hostas, so they probably should be moved anyway. When you buy bulbs they will usually bloom later than the bulbs already in the ground from last year. Next year those daffodils will probably bloom with your neighbors. Al

Hard to get some things right the very first time. All the gardeners I know move things multiple times trying new things and different combinations. Many of my best combinations were trial and error or happy accidents. Eventually, every once in a while we get it right!

Don't stress if your experiment didn't work the first time out. One of the cool things about gardeners and gardening is the optimism inherent in knowing there will be another spring next year.

As everyone has already noted, you've really got an easy fix; these are all easily moved. I think you probably had a good idea which might work quite well next year. The daffs may actually bloom earlier next year. They might be late because of the depth, but fall planted daffs are sometimes later blooming in the spring, I think someone already said that. Daffs do like more sun than hostas, but I have a neighbor who has them planted int deep shade & they bloom well.

I'm guessing your daffs are planted under trees that aren't in leaf now, so that's a perfect place to plant them. You can also plant dwarf iris in the same conditions. I don't think you have a problem. The bleeding heart may have been harmed if you dug into them but moving the daffs now won't negate that.

UPDATE: I poked around in that spot today and found out that I indeed had planted daffodils over three of the six bleeding hearts. I moved the remaining three and left the daffodils and the hostas that aren't up yet. The daffs are about 1-2 inches yet from emerging. I am going to wait and see what happens with them.

I'm not so heartsick anymore about this spot. Thanks for the advice and encouragement!

I moved Daff's last fall...have been blooming now for a week vs. the mother clump who hasn't yet but should start at least by this weekend.
I've made those same type of mistakes and ALMOST did it again a few weeks ago...was about to plant something on top of the newly fall planted Hosta (my 1st)!! If my wintersown Bleeding Heart ever sprout, I planned to plant out behind the Hosta so I'm soooooo glad marking was mentioned in this thread! I'll be doing just that to prevent doing damage next year :D

Just an update:

The daffodils FINALLY came up around the hostas. They are blooming same time as my redbud so it turned out okay. I will plant crocuses around them for the early bloom I wanted. Since I moved the bleeding heart, now everyone has their own space and is happy. So am I! Thanks for the advice everyone. I marked them on my garden plan!

Hey alicate, guess what? I guess I did the same thing, lol! I planted this bleeding heart hastily last year, just sticking it in a bare spot when my neighbor gave me a bunch. I forgot I had already planted daffodils there. Oh well, I guess it happens to all of us!

I have to laugh at this thread - as a very seasoned gardener (40+ years) who thought they had learned all the booboos of gardening I managed to plant new heuchera right smackdab on top of hosta and less than 5" away had planted a fern root earlier - guess I thought that spot needed a plant or two or three. We have all done it Alicate and like others have said - it is fixable.......

Ooh, I forgot to mention that today I also noticed a wood poppy coming up smack in the middle of an emerging hosta. But at least I can't take the blame for that one, lol! The wood poppy must have spread by seed. So see? Even Mother Nature does it occassionally!
