looks like one of my compost heaps from last year - mine was very dry and needed some more greens. I added a bunch of coffee grounds, chicken poop and plenty of water. A couple months later I ended up with beautiful compost. patience.....

Great looking bins. Looks like it could use more greens and more moisture. Perhaps some horse or cow manure and maybe little natural liquid nitrogen. You are going to have some great compost in a couple months. Bill Hill

I think it looks fine. I like those bins your hubs built, very nice.

If you are in a hurry - you could add some N stuff. Otherwise it will keep breaking down. Looks good.

Well, very interesting comments! I actually thought it was too WET, so there you go. Some of the almost decomposed veg. matter that you can't see in the pic. was slimy, the smell is akin to that of a sadly neglected gerbil cage. Thanks for the compliments about the bins, I love 'em.

It's all wrong. You need to deliver it to my garden right away, along with your next few loads, so I can do you a favor and take it off your hands (har, har).

Since we are just guessing by looking at pictures, you might be right. The very top surface area tends to dry but underneath it might indeed be too wet. Only you can tell. If it's slimy and stinky, then it probably is too wet. Flip it to aerate, that will help things along. More leaves on top will absorb odor.

Hi sandra christie, your last picture looks like a perfect mixture to me. The others looked a little too course and you wouldn't get good contact with the greens and browns if that's true. Keep the whole pile damp like a wrung out sponge and turn it every so often and that stuff will shrink, get loaded with worms and turn into the black gold we all crave here - that's after it heats up and breaks down some. Of course we've got winter to drag through and compost slows down considerably over the cold months. Hang in there, you're on the right track.

Did someone say worm? Turned one of my bins yesterday--every shovel had at least 5 worms in it---night crawlers too! Guess UCG really does help?, this is the first time I've used much-I found Starbucks :-)
