Training Mutabalis as a Tree

Randy in Dallas mentioned he'd seen Mutabalis trained this way in Ft. Worth. I looked at a pruning book and saw instructions for training a shrub like a peegee hydrangea as a small tree. All the canes were cut back except one during the first year.

I have a one year old mutabalis that I would love to have trained like a tree - I've been thinking I'd cut all the canes back except three during the first year and then follow the pruning instructions during the subsequent years. I'm thinking that with the size mutabalis can get it maybe it would need to be multi trunked instead of just one main trunk.

Does anyone have any advice? Randy, if you read this, do you remember if the Mutabalis was just a single trunk or was it multi trunked?
