Temperature Dropping...what to do with roses in pots?

I am a novice in general, but especially at roses, but I have a plan to have a rose garden.

So I bought a bunch of bare root roses and since my yard isn't ready I potted them in pots today (after soaking for a few days.)

I put the pots outside in the area where they will go, it's an area with lots of sun, but they only got a bit today.

We're having really crazy temperatures, today it was 80, tomorrow the high is going to be 42, so my question is what should I do with the potted roses? should i leave them there to keep getting sun? should i cover them? should I bring them inside?

I have carried my pots in and out continuously this year and am tired of that! Gets one motivated to plant more. Just try to carry them in a garage or something a little warmer if you feel worried about them. I think yours will be okay unless it gets as cold as freezing again. I have left mine out most of the winter except for teens and below freezing.

Leave them be for now. Unless the temp isa to get well below freezing and the roses are leafing out, they'll be fine.

It should also be mentioned that miniature (or any kind of) roses do not take well to being grown inside, period. You would join the very, very long list of people, many of whom might be much more experienced than you, who fail with this plant once it's brought inside. It can be done, absolutely, but it takes some knowledge of just what these plants need and how to provide it, inside. Most roses are fully deciduous plants, or want to be. They prefer a cool (or even cold), dormant period after their leaves drop. Just as any deciduous plant would do, they suffer and complain when their natural cycle is completely disrupted. The watering of any indoor plant needs to be done 'as needed' rather than by a calendar schedule. Most people use their fingers to test the dampness of the soil under the surface. You can also use a small wooden dowel rod...if it comes out damp after being inserted, don't water. Many people learn to tell by simply lifting the container and judging the need for a good watering by the weight. That takes experience. It's imperative that the potting medium be one that drains rapidly so that you can water thoroughly every time, no little sips. Watering frequency depends upon: the type of plant, size of plant in relationship to the pot, type of potting medium, time of year, temperature and relative humidity of the room, duration and quality of light, and type of container, just to name some of the factors. Not only did the temperatures change, but so did the duration and quality of light. Seasonal differences are extremely meaningful to plants. Your rose may have been able to languish on the window sill in the summer, but once fall came around, it was simply unable to even do that anymore. No amount of fungicide of any kind can 'fix' this kind of problem. Roses like plenty of direct sunlight. You cannot provide that, even on the sunniest window sill. Luckily, there are artificial lighting kits and lamps for those of us who wish to grow those kinds of plants needing more light than can be found inside the home.

They might go dormant or just slow down. I have a bunch of roses in pots that I am planning to plant this year. Like you they are a combination of some I've bought and some that I had to dig up while there was construction was going on in my yard. When the temps dipped into the teens, I would bring them in the garage/basement. After the third time, I said, screw it, they are staying in there. So they were in there for a few weeks. Some of them started to put out growth, but it was pale yellowish green. But as soon as they went out into the sun, boom, they took off. Now I did have some sunlight coming in through windows, but not a lot. You could maybe put a plant light on a timer. But I would think this time of year keeping them outside would be preferable. But I think they would be ok in the garage. You will have to water them at least once a week.

This is what I do, and I never lose any roses, and it doesn't matter what zone the roses are rated at: I overwinter my 50 roses in large pots in my garage with the 2 cars. LOL Three car garage. Here's what I do: - I keep deadheading until it's time for them to go into the garage. - I keep feeding them and watering well until it's time for them to go into the garage. -Then when the temperature gets to be about -6C I cut all the leaves off at the point they join the heavier stem. I don't cut any height off of the plant. - At this point I water them really, really well and move them by dolly into the garage. - I cover them with thick blankets, layers of flannel sheets or sleeping bags when the outside temp gets colder than -20C. - My garage is insulated. - Then I leave them alone in the dark. Doesn't matter if the garage door is opened and closed. - Around January, I look and see if they're dried out a bit. - If they are, then I water each rose 1/2 cup. - I repeat this every month. - As the weather starts warming up, I take off some blankets - so they don't start making new growth in the heat. - Any new growth should be broken off as you would thorns - just push them to the side, and they'll fall off. - If you have only a few pots - you can start taking them outside during the day when it gets about 5 C outside. Bring them inside until the night temperature doesn't drop below 2C. - Remember to water really well once you take them outside. - If you have a lot - then either wait until night tempreatures are 2C before you take them outside - or cover them with blankets at night. ----------------- This winter was really warm, so I didn't cover them at all. I'll just mention what I do for the entire process. I use the baggie method and stratify rose seeds at a temperature of 2 to 5 C (35 to 40 F) and generally in about two months germination has begun. I carefully pluck the sprouted seedlings from the bag and plant them into an organic mix that contains no compost or fertilizer, I have also used ProMix with good results. Seedlings are very fragile and must be tented for the first while, if they wilt and dry out or overheat, often it's the end of them ... also, be very careful of over watering! Last year, I had tons of early germinations in November and seedlings developed very well during winter while sitting in a cool sunny south window, I ended up with nice stocky plants! Many folks also choose to grow them warmer and under lights, I don't have any experience with this, though avoid frying them with intense light or heat. The reason I do the baggie method is that many seeds will stay dormant and require a second or even third round of cold stratification to wake them up. So, removing those that have sprouted will give the rest a chance to germinate in their own time. If all seeds are sown in a pot at the same time, those that remain sleeping will likely never get a chance. This might be okay for some, though because I do hybridization, I want to give all potential seedlings a chance.

Follow Karl's advice as he is right on. I have several in pots and took them out of the garage where they were overwintering last week. The roses in them looked really great.
Unless we get a really bitterly cold snap like 15 degrees for several days on end, they will stay outside and be fine the rest of the month.

Ditto. I don't worry about anything but the teas until it's well below freezing.
Maybe line them up along the south facing wall of the house and throw a tarp over them if it's going to get really chilly.

Just potted bareroots? Leave them out. If you had planted them in the yard, that's where they would be anyway. They will be fine.

They will fare much better with a little cool air of 42 than with the hot days of 85-90. Toughen them up outside with as much cold as you can get above freezing, so that they can be prepared for the heat what sounds like a really hot summer on the horizon based on how hot it is now. If we should get the threat of a freeze around Easter, that will be the time to take your roses into the garage, but not now.

Also last year a friend gave me a frost cover. It covers about 5 or 6 potted roses. If you have roses outside in pots and the temperature is around 30 or above you can just throw this cover over them to keep the moisture off. Works great and saves you lugging back and forth.

We have had temps in the 50-60's and one day 73., but at night the temps are in the 30's to high 20's. I have kept my roses in pots outside all winter and I just cannot believe the new growth that I have on them, and even the ones in the ground have leaf buds about an inch long growing from the canes. It is really scaring me because we are only in the second week of March, is this unusual cause I don't remember last year having this much growth this soon, its maddening! I just hope the temps don't drop too low.

Kate, that cover sounds like it would work good, do you know where your friend purchased it?

I believe she got it at either a Lowe's or Home Depot. They should be found wherever gardening supplies are available. What's cool about this one is it has a drawstring around it. So if I'm using it for cover on a windy night I can really cinch it down.

On bareroot rosees just emerging from dormancy the night time chill is A GOOD THING. No need to protect them. Leaf buds are normal. Foliage just starting to open can easily withstand 26 degrees. You should be worrying about the hot days not the cold nights. Keep them out of the sun and be very careful they don't dry out. They need to make some root growth and in the meantime, protect the bare canes by mounding mulch up over them so they are protected from drying winds. Smart move to pot them up, you'll get that root growth going.

Thanks so much for all the advice!

I did end up leaving them outside last night and I think they will be fine. Some of the new growth did wilt, (I did water them quite a bit, so I don't think it was that) and I cut it off, I figure they should focus on making roots now.

Since this is the case I'm going to soak and pot the rest of my roses.
