Potted Rose - Rose Storage Question

Hello,

We are the process of a temporary and then permanent move. We sold our home and must be out of it by the end of the month, but our new home will not be ready for move-in until the end of next month. I am taking about 65 of my roses with me, some are bands, one gallon plants, and others are roses that I dug up an placed in pots prior to listing our current home. Here's my dilemma, the condo that we will be living in for a month has a patio that will accommodate about 30-35 of the smaller potted roses. My issue is related to the roses residing in large pots. I have a friend who is willing to let me use his backyard to store the roses in large pots. Many of these roses are my plant "babies" and I have been growing them for years; I am protective of them. Here's my question, the condo has a garage that would likely accommodate roses which will not fit onto the patio. I know sunlight is essential for rose growth etc.. What would 28-29 days in a garage without light do to my potted roses ? Right now our temperatures are highs in the 70's with lows in the high 50's. Next month they should be in the low to mid 80's with low's in the low 60's and no significant humidity.

Please help... this is definitely new territory for me...

They might go dormant or just slow down. I have a bunch of roses in pots that I am planning to plant this year. Like you they are a combination of some I've bought and some that I had to dig up while there was construction was going on in my yard. When the temps dipped into the teens, I would bring them in the garage/basement. After the third time, I said, screw it, they are staying in there. So they were in there for a few weeks. Some of them started to put out growth, but it was pale yellowish green. But as soon as they went out into the sun, boom, they took off. Now I did have some sunlight coming in through windows, but not a lot. You could maybe put a plant light on a timer. But I would think this time of year keeping them outside would be preferable. But I think they would be ok in the garage. You will have to water them at least once a week.

You could probably pull if off. If you also could kept the garage door open for a few hours a day, it would probably help a lot. Does the garage door have the little windows above it? If so, it would let a little light in the rest of the day as well. When you move them back outside again in the desert sun with summer coming on, I would def keep them in the shade for a few weeks then transition them to full sun.

Another thought: If you have a little hand truck you could maybe rotate some of them out with some of the others on the patio. Make them take turns every 4 days or so. It would be more work but you could water them while they are outside that way too.

In pots, you want to plant them high so the roots have as much of the pot as possible to use. The assumption is that they will be wintered over in a place where the whole thing will be kept warm enough that it doesn't matter. Somebody has a trick for 'mounding' roses in pots. I don't remember what it was since I usually drape moist towels of considerable antiquity over the top. BTW, A lot of people consider shed storage of potted plants to be equivalent to planting in the ground but a zone colder. It's a problematic storage space for plants. The only heat source is the sun, and sheds tend to be poorly insulated. So they heat up during the day, but cool down overnight to close to the regular outside temperature. It's definitely different from an attached garage, which is often a better built structure, and benefits from heat loss from the house.

The cold in your zone won't kill the roses. it's being exposed to the dry wind that saps moisture from them that does most damage. My potted roses overwintered in my unheated greenhouse get so hard I can pound a nail with the frozen pot. They're exposed to the light all winter. In late February the buds begin to swell and after pruning in early March they all leaf out. The only plants I keep from freezing are the overwintered rooted cuttings kept in a cold frame. Nothing gets a blanket put on it.

I use Rose Tone on all of mine in pots. I put less than the instructions call for and fertilize more frequently. The constant water running through the pots depletes the fertilizer much faster than for those in the ground. Saying that however I don't use Rose Tone on anything until it has been in a pot about 6 months for grafted bare root and a year with own root babies. The OR babies get seaweed fertilizer that I water down weaker than the instructions say before giving it to them and they get it every two weeks. Of course if your roses are in small pots you don't want to give them as much Rose Tone as those in big pots. Make sure you water very frequently though on those you fertilize at all. I got roses from Brecks last year and some of them even with the regimen above that are barely breaking dormancy this year. I think they were just very weak from their bad start.

Congrats on the find!! I am in Essex and has been circling the Big Boxes and various nurseries in and have never had any luck finding a recent Kordes. Guess I might have to make a visit to Morristown AgWay just to see what is on offer. I have an MA from Chamblee. I have always just planted potted roses right away. If it is early in the season and the weather is wet and cool, they barely experience any setback. You are probably a week past the best planting time, but with some care, it should be OK. I know some people shade new plantings when it is really hot, but I don't do that. Just make sure you have a big enough whole, MAKE SURE IT DRAINS WELL, and mulch and water. Yes, the rocks!!! I only dig a hole slightly larger than the pot now, simply because it is sooooo hard to dig.

Unfortunately the patio is accessed via the condo, so moving back and forth from the garage to the patio will be a no go. The garage does not have windows but I could probably place some of the roses along the walls near the garage door and open the garage a couple of hours so the roses can be exposed to open shade or even some direct sunlight. Thank you for the suggestion! I just want my roses to survive this process. Fortunately it is only for 1 month or less.

What are the low temperatures??

You may be able to cover them at night with sleeping bags, blankets, etc.
