Your soil and climate conditions are different enough from mine that I will not recommend my own favorites to you. However, I look forward to reading what you decided to add to your collection.

The only one from your list, hat I grow here in Crete is, Lady Emma Hamilton.
She is in full sun all day and only gets watered once a fortnight during the summer.
I cannot find a fault with her.
She is healthy, evergreen, flowers year round and is extremely pretty with a scent to die for.
I have been so impressed with her that I have bought two more.
The only thing I cannot tell you, is how she is as a cut flower.

i need to read and research more, it is so hard to TRY to get anything out of DA literature, as there IS no lovelier rose than the one he is describing!! i know you know what i mean! that's why we come here, a bit of objectivity!!

having expanded my gardens, and brought in 8 cubic yards of fine soil, i can hardly wait...but it is like deciding what you want in a candy store!!

Harlow Carr is very lovely but fried in my heat. Young Lycidas I would definitely try because it's so beautiful and the comments I've heard have been very favorable. Carding Mill was great for me in the heat of summer and is very nice, not terribly fragrant for me, but a very good cut flower. Bishop's Castle is lovely and fragrant, average for cutting. Ambridge Rose was a rust bucket for me, but others have had no problem. Grace is supposed to be good in the heat but I have no personal experience. I like the soft yellow color of Charles Darwin and it is fragrant.

ingrid, great info. yes, anything that fries in the heat i do not need. and pink is pretty easy to come by. YL is for sure, so much nice press. carding mill cuts, so that is a highlight. and grace.

ive got stong east exposure, the west is less here, thus my david austin bed...poor guys that can take the heat ...GET IT!! on the west side...

Young Lycidas is a great rose here. Really great.

I can highly recommend Christopher Marlowe. It did exceptionally well even in drought conditions. It does seem to appreciate some shade in the hot afternoon. Blooms from spring to frost, extremely vigorous and healthy. Fragrant and pretty in a bouquet. The bloom color is hard to capture in photos, sort of an orange-pinkish blend. Sounds weird, but looks beautiful in person.

Darn it Daisy, I was trying to eliminate Lady Emma from my 'buy' list this year. After seeing your fab photo of that awesome bloom I think Lady Emma just jumped to the top of the list. Do you have any pics of the whole bush?

I am a newbie so I don't know too much...but I did just order four from Chamblee (two each of Winchester Cathedral and Glamis Castle). They arrived perfectly, with a few blooms, and I just wanted to say thank you to all that post because I have learned so much from all of you! Tamara

I have Charles Darwin and although it has a fantastic fragrance and a beautiful colour I think it fries in the heat... I had to move it around my courtyard (it was in a half barrel) all summer. The blooms lose colour and change from that lovely yellow into a beige. However, when I put it in a much shadier spot it recovered. I still love it, particularly for its lemony rose scent, but I don't think it does well in strong sun. This year I've relocated it to the north side of the house which gets only partial sun -- we'll see how it does! Btw, I'm in the SF bay area fwiw.

I'm new to DAs, but tried to do as much research as I could before deciding on Young Lycidas, Crown Princess Margareta, Princess Alexandra of Kent and Teasing Georgia - for my very hot climate (although dry here, not humid). One I did plant last spring that I never hear anyone speak about is Mary Rose. As many DAs in their first year as I understand, she was kind of slow to take off, but this year she is already forming a beautiful bush, very round, very healthy and covered with buds. Her blooms are on the smaller side, and not spectacular by any means, but what is noteworthy about her is the scent that fills the air as you walk by her when she is in bloom. It is quite heavenly. Definitely not a vase candidate, but I'm quite pleased with her, and she couldn't care less about our heat.

I only grow two Austins and one is a dog who despite the fact that his flowers are to die for (all three or four of them in as many years) has a shovel standing right next to him - so the only first hand recommendation I could make would be for Windemere - the color is very delicate, the blooms are lovely, the bush has filled out nicely in the same period of time that the other has languished and she is not stingy - the down side is the blooms seem almost like day lilies in staying power. However there are lots of them coming on all the time to make up for that.

In defense of the other rose it is own root and my Windemere is grafted, which should initially make some difference but not as much I would think as I am seeing. I believe the slacker is just a dud - so I don't want to mention his name and cause his brothers to suffer, perhaps undeservedly.

I have Charles Darwin in a pot, Bishop's Castle in the ground, and a younger Carding Mill in the ground.

As of right now, Bishop's Castle is one of the most steadily repeating roses out of all the 40 something roses I have right now and it is very fragrant. It is a rather spindly rose to start off with, but it has some thicker canes now and stands up straighter, but the blooms still tend to nod at times.

Unfortunately, all 3 of the roses are the "thin" petaled Austin varieties and get scorched pretty quickly in Ohio country sun...which is more intense than you might think. Carding Mill isn't totally mature, but I would say as of right now, Bishop's Castle is the most heat resistant of the 3. I love all 3 though.

I can't speak about the others, but both for Ingrid and I, (both in hot dry inland circumstances) Carding Mill seems to do really well, it seems reasonable to think that it would do well for you, too.

Windermere I have, it is a very delicate flower that lasts only a day or two, with a beautiful fragrance. Quite a heavy bloomer, there are always new buds, but I must constantly clean it up. I had one in a hot spot where it suffered, so I moved it to a cooler place.

Christopher Marlowe has been very reliable, good performer, little fragrance, though.

Lady Emma Hamilton is somewhat of an octopus grower too. Lowish and wide. Excellent fragrance.

Bishops Castle has a powerful sweet fragrance, I would grow it for the fragrance alone, but repeat has also been excellent. It's a big octopus grower here.

Heritage can take the heat, but she blows fast anyway. The flowers hold up longer out of the strongest sun. I still love her because the blooms are so pretty, but they do shatter.

One with thicker petals that I love so much is Teasing Georgia. In my climate she is pretty much buff yellow without the other tones you see in some pictures. She is flat-out gorgeous :) I have her where it doesn't get much hotter, lol. She does great, although I don't know if she's faster to repeat in a cooler garden.
