Absolutely gorgeous healthy roses. All 17 of them snug in a bucket of fish water and waiting for the snow/sleet to end. I believe the forecast calls for 60s next week. Lows in the 20s this weekend.
Yes, it's spring in Nashville!

What comes next is all based on my experience and the advice of a well-trusted rose friend (ARS CR and all-around great guy). I originally had my shipment scheduled for delivery in early March, thinking that our zone 7 winter would be too much for new bare roots. While we were talking about something else one day, my friend mentioned Pallatine Roses. I told him that I had a shipment from them for March delivery. He asked why I didn't have them delivered in November. "November?", I asked, naively. He told me to pot them and keep them in my garage, knowing that I have been keeping potted roses for 3 years now. The cold garage will keep them dormant, but will protect them from the drying winds. I trusted his advice, and I changed my shipment date. Marina, to keep potted roses over the winter, you don't have to shuffle them in and out of the garage. Keep them in the garage and check on them every once in a while. Just make sure they don't go completely dry, but don't water them too much either. The idea is to keep them dormant. They won't need lots of sunlight because they're not growing. A bit of in and out will be necessary in the spring to harden them to outside conditions, but it's not as much as it would be if they were being held in a warmer space (like a greenhouse). As to planting them and mounding them, I don't think it's cold enough here for that yet. Don't you winter-protect roses like that after things have frozen? We've had frost a couple of nights here in Stafford, but no hard freeze yet. I went to HD this morning to get the ingredients to make up a few batches of potting mix (scotts garden soil, perlite, and spaghnum moss). I'll go down to the garage in a little while and put the not-so-little guys into their pots. Connie P.S. These aren't the only roses I'll be keeping in the garage. I have some bands from Rogue Valley coming soon. They'll be re-potted, and kept in the garage under lights along with some of my well-rooted cuttings. Winter is for rose gardening in the garage. :)

Last spring I found a rose I really want, Schoen Ingeborg, on Palatine's website--naturally after they were sold out. I fully intended to place an order for it this fall, only to find that Palatine wasn't offering it. Rats! You are lucky they have some of your Pickering choices Tammy. They don't have any of mine. However, Antonia d'Ormois looks absolutely stunning. I'd like to know how she does for you. It may be possible to find some on my Pickering order elsewhere like Nevada and Golden Wings, but others will be difficult to find in stock at any other nursery. I may opt instead to go ahead and buy more lovely species from Forest Farm and wait to get my Pickering order from Pickering next year. I do want to make a point of giving them return business next year as I think they will be in special need of orders. Wish there was something I could do to help them now. Melissa

Kenneth , where if you don’t mind sharing are you in southern tn? I’m so sad I just missed you ... I lived in Burns , outside of Fairview / by Franklin if you are familiar . I think the reason for trimming canes and removing new growth is to protect the roses from desiccating. I read that after planting they need about 2 weeks to grow feeder roots and be able to absorb water. Until then, they use water that is in their canes, and active growth may use this water too quickly and weaken or even kill them. The roses I get from Palatine are always dormant and so I never trimmed the canes, but I did it with roses from Hortico that were actively growing when I received them: if the new growth was close to the top of a cane, I shortened these canes to cut it off, and if it was closer to the graft I just removed the white growth. Then I mounded them with soil. All these roses have grown very well.

I'm so jealous! My order from them isn't scheduled to ship until 3/11. I just have no idea where I'm going to plant them all! I received my 6 bareroots from S&W Greenhouse last week and I could barely find a spot for them! Now I have 7 bareroots from Palatine, 28 form Hortico, and 9 from Edmunds on their way this month (I have no idea how I ended up with that many!!!! I had multiple orders and lost track I guess). I think I've already lost my Helen Naude this winter, so there's one open spot...its a start...

I really can't wait to see pictures of your garden, Susan! I bet it will be wonderful once you get everything situated!

Cool! I think mine must be on their way. I got a message from UPS a package is coming from NY, and it doesn't say who it's from. I'm assuming it must be them. I don't have anything else coming from back east. Can't wait! Should arrive Monday. Yippee!

I don`t have any coming until the end of March...and I can hardly wait. I planted my Palatine bare-roots this fall and they look like they did well over winter. Coming: Pink Popcorn, Michelangelo, St Eliz of Hungry from Heirloom,Grande Dame,Windermere, Francis Meiland from Edmunds and Englands Rose,Sharifa Asma, Queen of Sweeden,Lady Emma from DA!!! Snow here today, but Spring is coming!!! Included..my favorite Palatine rose, Out of Africa. Wonderful rose! Lesley

I figure what doesn't fit I will just give away. I have promised myself not to keep any stragglers. I just don't have room for 2 Sally Holmes. I hope I can enable some locals because if not......

Also, Kitty, I bought some of those big flexible 2 handled bucket things at *gasp* Big Lots.
I keep fertilizer, tools, use them for collecting pruned pieces etc.
The one I have the roses in is likely 20 gallons.
Also, they sent their roses bundled together and it made it really easy to get them into water.
No tape and all that stuff like with bands. I hate that part.

Sounds great. Sally Holmes will get LARGE. Big, beautiful bush covered in blooms. If you're going to give it away, pot them up and take them over to the Nashville Rose Society. Someone will scoop them up real quick.
