Kristi -- In MY experience, this is a BIG rose.
Sandy Gaal grew it over an arbor -- bountifully.

You can probably get away with a wine barrel, for a time, but where do you plan to place it? Remember, it will have very long canes! Eventually, it will max out in the barrel (and/or the barrel will rot out). We eventually built walls around the barrels with stackable blocks, and pulled the pieces of the barrel out, one-by-one. (Yes, it was a real pain.)

In California, after many experiences in doing so, I would NEVER again plant ANY rose in a wine barrel.

Just to be sure, I asked DH what he thought.

What rose is EvS? I may be the only person not to know but I really think it would be nice if folks would spell out the rose at least once to avoid confusion. Denise

Jeri, I figured you would have tried this at one point in your time. I appreciate your input. I have this ugly ugly stacking brick engineered retaining wall and a huge concrete patio, so the overall effect is grey. I usually put the wine barrels on rollers and I actually use them for all sorts of things including a couple fruit trees and veggies and blueberries. I was thinking, "why not roses?"

The space I'm looking at gets filtered light and only a couple hours of sunlight in the afternoon. The area is currently my little rose nursery... and I noticed that the EvS bloomed all summer in that spot, probably because it's a hybrid musk, and it stayed evergreen most of the year. I'm secretly hoping the wine barrel might check the size a little... I guess I have to decide if I should try it even if I only get 5-7 years out of it. It would bring lots of enjoyment and beauty to that area of the patio.

I actually don't mind if it gets big. But I forgot that EvS really does get BIG. Saw one in the ground in Petaluma last spring, come to think of it. I was hoping to put a wooden trellis behind it, and sort of tie it into multiple sprays... but maybe I'm off my rocker. (My DH certainly thinks so.)

I'll have to go back to the search function and see if there is a post about which roses can handle containers. I also have a couple smaller roses (Honorine de Brabant, Vicks Caprice, and La Reine Victoria... but those will all need more sunlight than a Hybrid Musk, I'm guessing.)

Eh, maybe I'll throw in a camelia and call it a day. But I just love the way EvS smells in bloom.

You know what? If you really want to do that, DO IT.

You won't have a problem for a few years, and heck -- you might not have one at all.

I know not everyone agrees with me, but here's my thinking -- if you REALLY want to plant something in a "different" location, DO IT. What's the worst that could happen? The rose dies? So, get another one. But at least you won't be left thinking that it MIGHT have worked.

I know that may sound contrarian, but that's the way I approach it. If it works, come back here in 10 years, and tell me I was wrong. :-)

Jeri, you make sense. Everyone frets over rose placement. It's a crap shoot. Sometimes surprises happen and that's a fun part of the experience. My EVS is planted in a corner of the veggie garden with a new 4 ft. fence behind it with full sun. It's putting out the first bloom this week. I have a feeling it's gonna get humungous! As usual, too many roses in too small an area. Oh well............
