Weigela 'Wine & Roses' shrub
Comments (19)I spoke to my local nursery man. They raise their own Weigela 'Wine & Roses' shrubs. Last summer was the hottest and driest summer in SC Kansas on record. It was worse than in the Dust Bowl days. The nursery man said that he had his young Weigela 'Wine & Rose' shrubs in pots in the full sun. (Pots tend to dry out faster than in-ground plants.) Anyway, he said that he didn't observe any scorching on any of his Weigela 'Wine & Roses', nor did he see any scorching on any of the other Weigela 'Wine & Roses' shrubs in the area. Basically, I can't assume what happens to the Weigela 'Wine & Roses' shrubs in Florida, Oregon, Iowa, NE Kansas, or any other geographical area is what will also happen to the Weigela 'Wine & Roses' shrubs here in SC Kansas since it is a different climate. And, prairiegirlz5, thanks for the information from your observations. I appreciate it....See MoreWine & Roses *or* Shining Sensation Weigela
Comments (3)I have both and I pick Shining Sensation based on the fact that my W&R has always had a "failure to thrive" problem. I've changed locations (which of course sets it back some) and altered culture, but it has remained a wimpy plant. My SS has filled in its spot admirably since planted in my sunny front foundation. I've only had it a couple of years. I used to have a Ninebark 'Summer Wine' there but it had a lot of fungus disease problems. The Ninebark replaced a Purple Sandcherry that was okay, but suffered from a leggy bottom that I could never get to fill in no matter how much pruning I did. As far as purple-ness, I honestly can't remember. I will look for a picture....See MoreWeigela 'Wine & Roses' Fall Color?
Comments (3)Well, I didn't think there was any Fall or Winter interest, but I still like the dark leafed weigelas. I guess I would prefer to have Spring and Summer interest and no Fall interest instead of fall interest with very little Spring or Summer interest like what you get with a dwarf burning bush....See Morecat attacking my Weigela Wine and Roses
Comments (10)Thanks for the responses. I'll prune the shrub tomorrow. Hopefully it'll keep a decent shape after all the dead branches are gone. morz8, I unfortunately didn't see your post till after I'd already gotten a cage, but I'll definitely look into Critter Ridder. I've been using several different sprays for deer and rabbit, but I didn't know you could get stuff for cats and dogs as well. (Also, if it really repels squirrels, I'll be extra thrilled.) We have a handful of neighborhood cats (a couple of which just seems like strays) that wander in and out of our yard, and I tend to enjoy their companyor at least find them innocuous. Don't know why that one fellow got so aggressive with a young shrub that isn't even good for sharpening his claws against!...See Morecfmuehling
