Your source for vintage rose postcards?

HMF has some wonderful vintage rose postcards - is there another resource to buy these other than ebay?

Wait till the weather warms up and possibly try flea markets. I get 75% plus of my rose stuff at flea markets. You might be surprised at the rose books you can find let alone vintage postcards.

There are any number of sources besides eBay to find vintage rose postcards: estate auctions, and antique shows (particularly ephemera/paper collectible/postcard shows) are two more. Sometimes you can find a dealer that's trying to get rid of overstock. So, it's not uncommon to find postcards at bargain prices.

Or.... you could always shop my webstore??? lol (no obligation of course). I like to think I sell at reasonable prices, and quite frequently have beautiful rose postcards listed.

Susan and Diane thanks for responding .Helpmefind,Garden watch dog are two sources for information that I have learnt from GW members.I know that I should be sure of hardiness before trying the roses .But I like these so much that Iam willing to try them .I just hope that vintage bands are as easy to grow as the plants I got from RU (It is the only mail order source I have used so far). Beth thanks for suggesting vintage.I didn't look at their availability because it was't mentioned at HMF.I ended up ordering monet,abracadabra,great news and charles de gaulle.The lady I spoke with said that she can't confirm monet until march 15th (even though they didn't say that in the PDF availability list) and that they have abracadabra now . I was told that I could save a doller on each rose if I give them two substitutes. Iam going to call them tommorow and name black lady and silver lining as alternatives if they can't send me my original choices .I hope that I will get monet rather than the substitutes.I came here to check the responses to my post and read your post about your finds at HD.Iam sad that I can't grab monet .I hope you will enjoy the roses you bought and post some pictures of them for us to enjoy.Thanks Dana

All are great suggestions. Once she's determined which roses she is interested in, my advice would be to search the Burlington list first because they same rose can be available from several sources for several prices. Why buy variety X for $15-$18 when the SAME one is available for $10? Determining who has what available right now, then ordering in the minimum multiples for shipping can greatly expand what you can get for the same money, AND it spreads the support around to the sources we have. I fully agree with supporting the sales at The Cemetery, El Cerrito and The VCRS Auction in March. You'll find things at those sales you won't find at any of the specialty sources because they either don't have the varieties or there hasn't been sufficient interest shown in them to get them propagated. Individuals producing their favorites or the stars of the gardens involved are far more likely to have ones and twos of really neat things than any of the nurseries can really be expected to do. Nothing against any of the nurseries! They do a spectacular job of keeping some wonderful things around and making them available, but no nursery person can be expected to produce ones and twos of difficult things or varieties which they honestly may only have the potential for selling a handful of in a year. The specialty sales can and do just that service, so going there to browse, learn, meet and support them is a great way to learn and expand your collection and garden. There is room for all of the sources and need for each one in their niche. Each one has their focus and strengths. Learning whose is which then working with them will keep all going longer and permit you to collect the garden you want at the most cost effective, efficient method possible.

I'm broke and out of space but I will be making room for the following: 1. BOULE DE NEIGE -- I've been lusting after this pure snowy white Bourbon for years and now is my last chance. His sister Coquette des Blanches is an excellent rose so I have high hopes for this beauty. 2. CASINO -- among my dwindling list of favorite vendors (Antique Rose Emporium, Chamblees & Heirloom) Vintage is the only one who is offering this fragrant Large Flowered yellow climber. He is replacing one of my Pilgrim's that got choked out by Belladonna last year. 3. ORFEO -- only Vintage and Rogue Valley Roses carry this dark red Large Flowered Climber that does particularly well in the Mid-Atlantic region. 4. SPARTAN -- nobody has this reddish orange VID Floribunda but Vintage. I figured I'd better snatch him up before it is too late. All these roses have strong fragrances. Others that I missed out on are Apricot Nectar VID, Lullaby, Osiria, Rosemary Rose, and Yolande d'Aragon. All these are hard to find but I'm particularly distraught over Osiria. Thanks for the advice mgleason56! It looked really different, very intriguing! I'll make sure it is in the best growing spot to give it the best possible start. I can start hauling compost and preparing the bed. It will be potted up first, and babied along. Good thing I made plenty of compost this year! I thought I'd also mention Vintage Gardens and their possible closing in my party plan (not roses) sales talk. Lots of people here love to garden and would like some nice roses. Every person can help a little, and maybe we can keep a great rose vendor who really deserves to stay in business! Still doing the HHRD, Linda

The local postcard clubs have shows every year. I don't know about your area, but there are several in this part of the country. I have quite a large collection, most of which I bought before there was an ebay.

Try this link, the NY Public Library digital gallery. There are two links there for pics of old roses that can be re-sized and then printed, "roses from nature" and "les roses." Maybe there are some images you can use there.

Be careful of copyright laws. Many on-line library collections are pretty particular about that. Ask first before copying/printing. I've posted a link to info that the San Francisco Bay Area Postcard Club posted on their web site.

Oh I didn't know this old thread existed. I've got some too, framed. I bought them off a friend many years ago, he made them up for me. Those Wills cigarette cards from the 1920's and 30's. One little polyantha that always catches my eye from these cards is called 'Jessie', and I notice a photo of this card is already on HMF posted by 'Billy Teabag'..
