Houzz Contributor. Hi there! I live in a 1940s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia.

Training your eye to spot classic vintage pieces will help enhance just about any interior design style. Whether you prefer vintage modern, Brooklyn modern, mid-century modern, eclectic, shabby chic, traditional or just about any other style besides the most minimal of minimalism, opening your eyes to flea markets, garage sales, antique stores, and even grandma's attic can help you score some great additions to your space. The secret is in the balance. For great inspiration, I highly recommend checking in with Victoria at http://www.sfgirlbybay.com/ on a regular basis, as she's got it down, and she's always mixing things up!

The Saarinan tulip furniture are vintage pieces that have remained classic modern for decades. The open feel and light in this dining room keep the feel modern, while the classic modern pieces and fabric are a throwback earlier times.
The Arts and Crafts detailing mixed with mid-century modern and bohemian pieces is balanced very well here.
The tulip chair, the enamel-topped table, the 1937 Parisian Exhibition poster, and hey, even those Apple speakers give this work area great personality.
This turquoise flat file has so much personality, and its large top makes it a versatile functioning piece.
Just a few key accessories add some personality to this contemporary space.
Nautical vintage pieces don't become clutter when used in the right amounts. Here the white paint, neat bedding, and shiny hardwood floors maintain the balance.
