Call me crazy, but I'm looking at three Rose-of-Sharon to bonsai. Remember, many grow flowering trees and shrubs, not to conform with typical bonsai rules but to make a wide visual experience of "wall-of'flowers". If you can get the shrub to survive in a bonsai pot, prune and train it to be wide from the front and very narrow from the side, it just might be worth the experimentation. OR, just plant it along a fence and prune it the same way and get a yard shrub that makes a great flowering statement without taking up so much space. Jay

I have a lavender chiffon Rose of Sharon. We had the coldest February since 1963 here last winter. The average daily temp all month was 19 degrees. THe little bush was small, but well mulched in. It is fine now. Blooming like crazy, beautiful light purple blooms that are almost double blooms. Just mulch it in real good with at least 3 inches of natural pine mulch and it should be fine. In my experience, the lavender chiffon is not as vigourous a grower than my other varities. You need a little patience with it, but it is worth it. Good luck!

I'd recommend one of the sterile types that doesn't drop seed. I don't know for sure if any of those are sterile. The best way to find out would be to ask a nursery. One ROS that I know for sure is sterile is Lavender Chiffon, which has beautiful double flowers. I've heard bad things about Spring Hill, so if it were me, I'd buy from a local nursery rather than them.
