hardiness of lavender chiffon

Hi,

I'm wondering if others have experience with Hibiscus syriacus lavender chiffon in a cold climate. Does it winter over in USDA4 or Canadian zone 5?

Hi Mary;
Lavender Chiffon as Hibiscus- Syriacus- Rose of Sharon is hardy to zone 5.I have a bad expierence with Syriacus,being in zone 6(Toronto) i have lost 3 Syriacuses including White Chiffon,Hamabo and Blue Bird over last winter.They did not make it.Wishing you a happy gardening-

I have a lavender chiffon Rose of Sharon.
We had the coldest February since 1963 here last winter.
The average daily temp all month was 19 degrees.
THe little bush was small, but well mulched in.
It is fine now. Blooming like crazy, beautiful light purple blooms that are almost double blooms.
Just mulch it in real good with at least 3 inches of natural pine mulch and it should be fine.
In my experience, the lavender chiffon is not as vigourous a grower than my other varities. You need a little patience with it, but it is worth it.

Mjtd I have a small trade of lavender seeds if you'd like to send a small trade of either the poppies or hibiscus...would prefer the hibiscus i think but the poppies are nice too...and i only have a small trade and don't want to jump in line ahead of graanieb ...email me tho if you'd like to trade a small trade...thanks :)

I have two different colored ones that I received in a trade in the fall of '06. Much to my surprise, they are still going strong. Both are the size of small shrubs and they bloom profusely every year. My soil has lots of clay and when planting them, we dug a nice sized hole and amended the soil. Both plants have definitely outgrown the original hole by now and don't seem to mind what they are growing in. One has started to gift me with several seedlings every year, which I try to find homes for since it's so hardy and such a wonderful plant. Definitely the seeds from this one are fertile. I have never found seedlings around the other one though. And I do heavily mulch both sights. I only trim off the dead ends when the plants leaf out in the spring. That's really all I do for them. Spanish lavender, Lavandula stoechas, is not even reliably hardy here in my zone 8 climate, but I fear that is more of a winter wet issue than actual cold. My wholesale nursery grows it (as well as 'Blueberry Ruffles', 'Boysenberry Ruffles' and 'Sugarberry Ruffles') but we list it zone 8 or above. You could try to overwinter it indoors but IME, lavender does not respond well to that type of treatment.
