Suggest a few Climbers

I sort of went wild over spring break and decided to remove some Italian Cypress and diseased looking jasmine that were next to and climbing up my wooden fence. The cypress trees were about 8 feet apart. I left the trunks in the ground about 8 feet high. I plan on stringing wire between them with eye hooks to support a climbing rose. I need a few suggestions for climbers that will stay narrow or will be easy to train to stay narrow. I have about 3ft in depth to work with before the climber would start to interfer with other roses. I have a one eyar old Lamarque on the fence now and like the way it has been behaving itself as it is growing upward and not outward. Color doesn't really matter but I would like quick rebloom, and some fragrance would be nice...

BTW I have a few other climber in my yard...Don Juan, Social Climber and Climbing Iceberg are well behaved and easy to train. However, Night Owl and ZD are huge messes as I am constantly chopping them back.

Any thoughts?

I have Lamarque too and just love it....It'll be 4 this year....Sounds like you already got two white's but if you be interested in another one I just love "Sombreuil".....Great fragrance, lovely big old quartered blooms, quick rebloom, what's not to like?......:)...Anyways good luck, climbers are such fun....

Thanks Paul, I love whites! I have quite a few in my garden and so far I love Lamarque. How big has it gotten in 4 years? Is it a constant bloomer for you? I saw "sombreuil" on Chamblees website. I really like it though I was hoping someone would recommend another noisette. I was wondering about Alister Stella Gray or Mme. Alfred Carriere.

Climbers are slow to establish, and may not perform really well for 4 or 5 years after planting. This is true even in my mild zone 9. I would be patient and make sure the plant is well-watered in this hot summer.

Yes, it's been one of my favorites to sniff, even if I've gotten the chance only a few times. As with the few other HTs I got, it's a bit slow to get growing, and I can count on one hand the number of flowers it gave me in its first year. This was its first: Talking about rose fragrances will turn this into another thread, but I'll have to say that I'm very happy with the variety of scents I've gotten to sniff already this year. A few of the once-blooming OGRs each shared a flower or two with me, and some of those scents just don't seem to exist among the moderns -- sweet face-powder on 'Nouveau Monde', the herbal Gallicas, the sharp and spicy Damasks (the Damask scent found in some of my HTs is a little different, with a sweet-lemon undertone). And if you've never experienced the strong clove scent of 'Rosa moschata' or related roses, I highly recommend you find a way to do so. Purple Splash does not turn (or fade to) pink, ever. Go for it. Great rose. If you do want pink, then I would recommend Berries N Cream or CandyLand. Both of them are equally vigorous, great big climber roses that could cover your shed.

It's nice to see climbers, because I don't like the Explorer climbers and that's all that will overwinter here.(I had John Cabot when I lived in zone 2a, and it was okay, but that's all). I grow clematis for height. But, of course, what I would really want are the prolific and large flowered roses of the warmer parts of the world. Thanks! Carol

Mme Alfred is something of a house-eater. Crepuscle is gorgeous but may also get too big.

Vintage Gardens gives a descriptive sketch of the relative size & shape for each rose.

Thanks Catrose, Does Mme Alfred C take pruning well? I wouldn't mind her growning over the fence but would need to keep her in bounds.

Sombreiul (sp?) was a disaster in my garden- little blooming and major defoliation. Sally Holmes grown as a climber blooms well and gets healthier as the years go by. My best climber is a once bloomer with some fall blooms but it so fragrant and dramatically beautiful in full bloom- Cl. American Beauty from ARE.
