Sounds like you'll have more room now for more roses - lol. Or do you plan to plant another tree? During one storm here a year ago or so, my pear tree fell down. No harm done - it wasn't a big one - but given to me as a mother's day gift. It's sprouted up from the roots, and although it looks more like a bush, it still holds its sentimental value for me. I liked having a small tree there - needed a vertical element.

And yes, it's hard to not check this forum every day! haha Glad you're safe, and your electricity is restored.

No, I am not going to be planting another tree there. I am actually glad for more light even though I had the blue spruce limbed up so I could plant underneath it. There really isn't room for more roses, at least I don't think so, but the roses that I put in too close to the tree last year will do much better now with more sun and no tree roots to deal with. I am planning a row of lily bulbs right next to the rose bed as I love rose and lily combos and there was not room before the tree disaster.

So very lucky no one was hurt. That would have been horrible. Glad you, your family, and neighbors are all ok!

Wow, that must have been scary, just thinking of what might have been. Thank goodness you and your family are alright.

Hollygarden, your pear may not come back the same plant. Most pear trees are grafted on rootstocks and often the rootstocks are different from the scions.

Ann- thanks for the info. I did not know that. That may be the reason it's not blooming now! Well, that will be interesting to see.

Glad you and your house escaped unharmed, Rita. I've followed your postings with photos here and on the daylily forum as you have made changes to your yard - glad nothing there was ruined either because you have put so much work into making a beautiful garden. Hope your landscape guy can patch up the big mess quickly. As Ann says, it could have been so much worse - thank goodness it was not!

Rita, I feel your pain. We experience the same thing with the hurricanes. It's very frightening to say nothing of the incredible mess in the aftermath. I'm glad you are OK.

What a mess my front yard is hear the used to be tree. The rest of the trunk got cut up but the hard part was digging out the rest because some tree roots were still attached. Of course as luck would have it, they went straight down. Its out now but it was a project for two strong guys.

The daylilies and roses are a trampled mess. Good thing its early spring and everything has time to recover. They are on coffee break (or something) now and then will start to fill up the hole and move dirt around (and off plants). Lilies in that area haven't broken ground yet so I hope that saves them. The poor Siberian Iris are totally dirt covered.

For those who are not aware, blue spruce and pear trees are considered shallow-rooted, and they both are frequent casualties in bad windy weather. I lost my fairly big pear tree that way, and my neighbor across the street lost her two blue spruce that way. (I did enjoy looking at them--really miss them). You might want to consider carefully where you plant such trees if you decide to plant some.

Siberian Iris are pretty tough. I predict they will survive and thrive.

A couple years ago, during a bad wind storm, a very large branch from my neighbor's oak tree landed splat! right in the middle of my very old Buff Beauty. Had to prune BB nearly to the ground in several places. Good news is that BB just went right to work and produced new canes in no time at all. The only difference is what was once an old majestic BB is now a teenage BB, as it were--but it is improving each year.

But it sure is awful having to contemplate the damage these things can cause, isn't it.

Rita---so glad no one was injured-----Here in Pa. we had the same storm---lots of damage to the evergreen trees---

we were without power from Fri night until Mon. night --Luckily DH has a generator so he could keep the house warm and the refrigerators working during the day----

A friend and her beau just spent the last week in NY and headed back to California in the nick of time to miss that awful storm.

Right now it is annoying because I was dealing with it today. But its a garden and only some plants. I can fix it even if I have to buy some new roses and such.

I will be replanting some of that area anyway as I have more room because of the tree being gone. And I just can't believe how sunny it is now compaired to how shady before.

I knew certain ornamental pears were shallow rooted (and weak limbed) but I never thought blue spruce were. This was one of two very old blue spruce trees in the front yard.

I am so glad that you and your house are ok. Are you going to find out how secure the other tree is?

Last year we had a tree service remove 3 of our trees. One was a huge cottonwood, one was an ash, and one was a sugar maple. I thought the sugar maple was contributing to our ant problem, and I also thought that the cottonwood could someday fall on our house. Now we have some huge stumps and a lot of light.

Just finished prunning and cleaning up that front yard rose bed. Yesterday I had the tree trunk cut up and the roots dug up and everything moved out.

I just can't believe how much sun there is there now. Anyway, the older bigger roses in the front bed, which were put in 2007 had no damage worth mentioning. Did need some hard prunning to get rid of broken limbs here and there but as soon as they leaf out and start growing that will be unnoticeable.

The newer bed section that had Heirloom roses from last year and the year before took the worst of it. Nearest the tree trunk so most flattened. I had to dig and loosen soil around the roots on some of the rose shrubs and pull them back upright as they had ben pushed down. Broken limbs so they got harshly prunned. Then the really little ones from last year are in truely bad shape. Two of them are just not there at all, must have gotten dug up and lost with all the trampling and root digging. I will just replace those as if I need an excuse to buy more roses from Heirloom. The rest of the babies in that section got beat up badly but own root roses come back so they should be fine after awhile, even if extra small.
