Gardening with Stone

Novice question about creating a stone path

Hello,

I have somewhat of a steep little knoll (40 degrees) in my back yard leading up to quaint wooded area with a bench, etc. I'd like to set a few flagstones (?) or appropriate stones to make it easier to walk up the little hill. Now it is just too difficult to manage the slippery grass when going up or down. If someone would have the time, I'd really appreciate the most basic advice on this little project. I suppose my main concern would want to avoid any dirt run-off from the area above each step, since I would have to dig each step about 1 foot or more to level them there will be a vertical wall of exposed earth right above each stone. I'd like to keep the stones clean and be able to run the mower over top of them without any issues.

Hi Joy! Your yard sounds beautiful with a little knoll and and the wooded area. This is an interesting question, I'm not sure if I understand how you want to do this if you still want to be able to mow the grass. We built a stone staircase leading out of one of the gardens as shown below; but this is obviously not able to be mowed, lol. Do you want the flagstone to be buried in the ground at the same angle as the hill for mowing purposes? Let me know, I'm intrigued and there must be a solution for this; there are many experts on this site who can give great advice! Karen

Karen that stone work is just BEE-U-TEE-FULL!

I'm a little more limited with money and mobility so I wouldn't be able to do anything like that. I'm thinking of about 5 steps (flagstones) that are spaced up my little hill (er, incline) just to make the 7 foot ascent more manageable. I was thinking if they were buried flat, there would be an area above each stone that would be exposed and might drain dirt on top of them but that's no biggie. I was also thinking if I got some that weren't too large the wheels of the lawnmower would simply pass over top each step without any troubles. I wish I could post a picture like you did but I'm not too puter savvy. I'll email you a picture of my back yard to give you an idea of what I'm talking about =). Thanks for replying.

Boy, I am not an expert here but I am trying to understand what you think your options are, and it seems you are going to need to decide how you want to create the "terrace" conditions noted by bullthistle--some form of step and rise concept, whether short or long stretches. You can find photos of stuff like that and instructions in various landscape books. The edge can be short pieces of timber, or properly shaped stone, or commercial material--maybe other things-- but you would not be able to just lay stones or loose material going down a slope, if that is what you are thinking. Actually I did just that, but on a slope over only about 20 feet that led up to the steps to my deck. It was gradual enough that negotiating the slope itself was not too athletic, but I wanted it to be firm and dry, so I collected and used irregular large fieldstone type rocks and set each one individually to match my usual footsteps--stride and angle of foot placement and surface area--whereas I could not have used flat flagstones. But, that would not work on a steep slope. Plus, I still have to do a little intermittent maintenance due to water erosion, which also would be much worse the longer and steeper the slope. But, I like the way it looks. There are other drainage issues that would affect whether you can just use the soil as fill or need crushed rock or gravel, but that's beyond me.

hi tansy-moon, I have made walking stepping stones directly in the ground by digging a shape of a large leaf out and at least 3 inches of soil depth placing cardboard or plastic,(cardboard is easier to remove from the edges) around the sides and bottom of hole. Pour the mixed mortar, smooth, then cover with plastic, using rocks along to hold the plastic down, (not on top). Your idea with a taped box will work, I would cover the whole box with plastic as well as tape, tree branch indentions would like great but remember where-ever there is an indention this will collect water and or dirt later, so don't set these to deep. Yes you will need to keep the stones wet for at least 7 days. If you write 'stepping stones' in the search box here you may find lots of other ideas or instructions. Wendy

Hi Janice, I've been there, done that, in regards to the straight path and feeling it's not working, lol. I guess it depends on the size of your yard, whether you want a straight shot to the pool or a meandering one; the visibility of the pool from the house--do you want to be able to see it at all times or are there shrubs or trees involved--some people like a little mystery in their yards, w/ a path leading visitors to another vista your style of gardening; do you like formal or informal, would you prefer the flagstone be buried flush with the grass and just be stepping stones, or is a wider path like a sidewalk more to your taste? Then as to the stone itself...we acquired most of ours from farm rockpiles and/or quarries, in all sizes and shapes imaginable, and the surfaces are not perfectly flat. Stone purchased expressly as flagstone from landscapers will be much nicer, but also at a higher cost. One thing that has helped us in the planning stages is laying out hoses on the ground and using them as visual aids. (Some folks use spray paint on their lawns, too) We try walking on the 'path-to-be' and see if we like it. Well.......the possibilities are endless and I realize I've asked more questions and haven't answered any! Sorry...........;-) Looking forward to hearing what you decide to do! Karen

Need help creating front door walkway.

Pavers can be done they will flatten out the area and level it for the walk way. I have a slope on the side and have had three companies come out that do professional pavers and not one of them has so much as balked at the slope which is significantly more sloped than yours. That said I would do something that is more in line with the style of your home. A brick or paver walk way would work but it needs to be redirected to the actual front door and not come in on the side. I am not sure why a topiary is planted right smack in front of your front door but that needs to be moved. I would remove your rock garden and then transplant the topiary between the two windows on the left. Then plant some low growing shrubs. Re route the walk way so that it comes up to the front door not to the side of it. Do you have a porch area to the right of the front door? Is that why there appears to be a sofa there? It looks off because it is blocking the window. Are you wanting a seating area there? Do you use that area?
