Gardening with Stone

creating a path in my yard in Chicago

Hi there....hope someone can help. On one side of my yard I wanted put put a flagstone path...maybe curved or straight...out from the house to our circular pool. I can't quite visualize what I want, but I know the boring straight path I put down in the fall is definitely "not working." I also need more flagstone, but don't know where to get more. I don't want huge pieces. If anyone has some creative suggestions I'd really love the input.

Hi Janice, I've been there, done that, in regards to the straight path and feeling it's not working, lol. I guess it depends on the size of your yard, whether you want a straight shot to the pool or a meandering one; the visibility of the pool from the house--do you want to be able to see it at all times or are there shrubs or trees involved--some people like a little mystery in their yards, w/ a path leading visitors to another vista your style of gardening; do you like formal or informal, would you prefer the flagstone be buried flush with the grass and just be stepping stones, or is a wider path like a sidewalk more to your taste?

Then as to the stone itself...we acquired most of ours from farm rockpiles and/or quarries, in all sizes and shapes imaginable, and the surfaces are not perfectly flat. Stone purchased expressly as flagstone from landscapers will be much nicer, but also at a higher cost.

One thing that has helped us in the planning stages is laying out hoses on the ground and using them as visual aids. (Some folks use spray paint on their lawns, too) We try walking on the 'path-to-be' and see if we like it. Well.......the possibilities are endless and I realize I've asked more questions and haven't answered any! Sorry...........;-) Looking forward to hearing what you decide to do! Karen

One idea that comes to mind would be to model your ‘paths’ after the streets of Paris or Washington DC. That is, where the Roundabouts are you would place a stone in the center. You could even have stones that are not flat, just pleasing to the eye in shape and/or color, with a path around them. To stop the small stones from sinking you can first put down a layer of sand that you have mixed with cement. Just a little cement will go a long ways so don’t get carried away. After laying the sand mix down make sure you tamp and smooth it down real good. Place you small stones of top of the sand. The moisture over time will cause the sand to harden into a strong layer that will repel the stones from sinking. Around the trunks of the crape myrtles trees you could design stars, circles, etc with the small stones.

Paniculatas are very reliable bloomer and many get larger in time so it may get a good plant that -depending on how it likes the site- may grow too big for it. Can you elaborate on the plant not getting morning sun? Is it just because the fence shades over that section? Hydrangeas are deciduous so you will see the fence during the winter time. I assume this is ok? Limelight is a favorite of people trying to do hedges. You can ck out posts about it by doing a forum search for 'limelight hedge'

I have to say, with kids and friends gravel will not be easy to maintain. It will, in fact, be everywhere including possibly through your neighbour's window. And yes, I know kids need to be taught rules and boundaries. But kids do dumb things. Or careless things. Or completely inadvertent things (like getting gravel stuck in the treads of their shoes). The grass looks healthy, it's a small patch, and grass is the most comfy play surface door kids. Plus son and friends are nearing an age where they can spend fifteen minutes mowing once or twice a week if they aren't there already. I say leave the grass. Would you hoa allow you to put up a fence panel in front of your cans that matches the rest of the fence?

I understand how people believe a drawing is key. As I'm looking for quotes at this time to get an idea of prices and then will finalize with the person doing the work I"m not worried. When they install I will be here and can confirm layout etc. I’m getting basic quotes per square foot to make sure it is something we can afford and someone we want to work with. The rest will come once I know who we want to work with. I said to people here it is simple. On site I worked with the people giving the quotes in some cases for 30 mins to detail what we wanted. If someone can’t even quote me for a 3 food pathway top of yard to bottom then there are issues. If they can and it fits our budget then we will work with them to iron out the details. I also think a lot of this needs to be decided with materials on site. We need to get the pieces and confirm the plan together. A picture from me even to scale on graph paper won’t help as I need to see it with them in real life. I cannot visualize what I want until I see it in our space. But I can tell who I might be willing to work with from talking to them for 30+ minutes and deciding if their quote is within reach.
