The World Today (12-26)

In my neck of the woods it's a balmy 36ÂºF (2ÂºC), foggy and drizzly. Chance of thundershowers in the evening. Hmmm....wonder what the difference between a 'thundershower' and a 'thunderstorm' is? Does anyone know?

A thunderstorm in aviation is reported when a clap of thunder is heard and is coded "TS" in METARs. There may be shower activity nearby but not at the site and that may be reported as showers in the vicinity. "VCSH" The newer automated weather sites use a lighting strike within X (can't remember what the mileage is) number of miles to report a thunderstorm.

If a rainshower is also occurring then it is also reported and coded as "TSRA". There can be modifiers added such as "TS+" meaning heavy thunderstorm where the lightning and thunder are heard almost simultaneously. Likewise with heavy rainshowers "SHRA+"

Most weather observation programs are conducted by aviation personnel or automated systems and "decoded" into general public terms.

You know I've been looking around here and other than you and maybe 1 or 2 others (a long time ago) no one uses this gallery much. I'm thinking of pretending the word says "conversations" instead of "gallery".

cleo, The 2 'Tainers are just used to "incubate" the seedlings outside, for the next 30 days, or so. Then I put 2 plants per 31 gallon container. So much for working out while they're playing video games, LOL. Plus I ate right along with them: Taco Bell and pizza. I must have lost during the week because I managed to eat all that and at this morning's weigh-in, I stayed exactly the same as last week. BUT (and that's a big but, LOL), the holidays are over and now I am going to buckle down and really get a consistent workout program going. Before you know it, spring will be here and I plan on being at my goal weight by then!

That was just too funny! I actually did LOL!

Thundershower = thunder and precipitation
Thunderstorm = no precipitation.

I'm an aviation weather briefer in my real life so I tend to get a wee bit verbose at times. You didn't notice that did you?

Conversation versus gallery, that thought had crossed my mind as well. If we just sort of gravitate over here to talk, what's the harm?

Lloyd - what an interesting career. How does one decide to become an aviation weather briefer? (Had to look that up too)

What would be cool is if you could have the phone routed to your house and just advise while sitting in your PJ's.
