Thrown Out Into the Cold Cruel World Today! (pics)

It was time for them to go (as I tried to convince my 26 year old son, a few years ago.....)

So out they went, into "real life" - - wind, fresh air, sunshine, and the chance for them to make their mark in the World.....

I planted them as deeply as possible with just the leaves above the surface:

As with any offspring, I will be taking "fatherly" care of them, until they reach adulthood. For the Cold-frames I used the left-over Rubbermaid container pieces and fitted with Plexiglas tops to permit sunlight to enter:

Great Picture! (The tomatoes look good too!)

Here in the South Bay, we are hitting high 60's and sometimes in the low 70's now. To be sure, we will get a cold snap in March (remember, it hailed on Mar 15 last year), so I have the electric blanket all ready to put over the cold-frames just in case.

And meet... Bobby Ray! Anita named him. "Bobby Ray! Git me a beer, boy!" It all has a sweet ring to it, hollered out the back window: "Rye! Omie! Fern! Bobby Ray! Supper!!" The kitty room is essentially a closet off the mudroom out back. A kitty flap opens to it from a kitchen cupboard, and a cupboard door opens to it from the mudroom, where I pass in the food and water. A big door opens to it from the garage, where I get in to clean out the litter boxes. It's full of sheepskin padded shelves on different levels, a 5-foot cedar log to scratch and climb, a hanging basket, various strings and dangly toys, and best of all, a screened window facing the back porch, yard and pond beyond. It's where they are safe from dogs when humans leave the house. Yes, the kitty room was built, uh, a year, before the kitties arrived. It's been 20 years since I had kitties. I was worried. I've been waiting for these kitties for a while now. :)

I too am slightly embarassed to admit that I still have about 35 WS seedlings in small nursery pots sitting in the pot ghetto. Well, in mid-summer it was over 100, so that's an improvement. That's one of the problems with winter-sowing - too many seedlings! :) We have had unusually mild and drizzly weather lately, so it's perfect for transplanting. Two days ago, I planted out 12 seedlings of Polemonium reptans (Jacob's Ladder). These are easy to start from seed, and I already lost most of the first wave of transplants during the summer - slugs! So, I'm pushing the envelop and planting stuff to see if it will make it through the winter. What's to lose? I've got about a dozen seedlings of native perennial vines - Campsis radicans (trumpet vine), Clematis virginiana, and Aristolochia - still sitting in those little pots. I don't have trellises ready for them, so they are going to have to be sunk into the ground in a veggie area for the winter. There are also a few warm-season grasses in little pots. They are dormant now, but I'm thinking of planting a few just to see if they'll make it. They too are very easy to start from seed.

Mike, Typhoon looks great!!! Thank you for posting the updated pic's. It looks like it's healing really well. Let's face it Typhoon is gorgeous regardless of temperature. Just wait until the August heat comes on :) I know its been 10 months but I think your cutting is going to surprise you and root before the end of the season. It sounds like there's much more going on here than can be addressed on an internet forum. I do know that some men will drive you nuts & then tell everybody you're crazy, but I can't tell if that's what's happening with the photos & with his former flame or not. I once had a "boyfriend" (ick) who played his ex & me against each other. He was an expert manipulator, & eventually I found myself insanely jealous (not a normal state for me; I had been perfectly self-sufficient before he careened into my orbit-& I eventually became perfectly self-sufficient again, but at the cost of a lot of time, a lot of misery, & the loss of a great deal of myself). & his poor ex was in a much worse place, calling him all the time, begging for "time" with him, leaving notes on my front door. He enjoyed having two women making fools of themselves & wasting their lives fighting over him. I can't tell you what to do, but I will share with you that, if some man called me an "evil witch", I'd take that as a "I don't love you at all & I have no respect for you" statement. which means he or I would have to find another place to live. I wish you the best.

Hi,
These containers that have 15 plants are just a way station until the all end up in the ground, right? Will you do any in containers?

Is the pipe on the left perforated and you will pour water in it to water the roots?

The 2 'Tainers are just used to "incubate" the seedlings outside, for the next 30 days, or so. Then I put 2 plants per 31 gallon container. The pipe is to send water to the reservoir underneath the plant base. See this link for additional info.

I noticed your plexiglass top follows the contours of the Rubbermaid tub very well. Just curious, what tool did you use?

Actually George, I just put the container section on the Plexiglas and traced out the edge pattern. Then I used a sabersaw to free-hand cut it. I have many rough edges that I will sand / grind off at some point in the future.
