Suggestion for Single Petaled Red Climber?

I am looking to find a dark red climbing rose, single petaled, that would be somewhat mannerly in that it would be 8 to 10 feet tall and maybe up to 4 foot wide? Scent is not important.

I would also be interested in hearing any suggestions for a good red climbing rose that might have more petals. I've have just taken an interest in the single petals after seeing Mrs. Oakley Fisher.

Altissimo is a beautiful single petaled red climber. It also has great disease resistance, which is always a plus.

Altissimo indeed fits your description.

For a climber with more petals, I hope you will consider Altissimo's striped daughter, 'Fourth Of July.' I love that rose, and it's good almost everywhere.

The Garden Safe product is just neem oil. I wouldn't expect it to burn in cool weather. (It doesn't do much good either.) However, in the original set of pictures, I saw an orange patch that might be spray burn, but it was out of focus. #3, as Olga says, is blackspot. Notice the fringy edges (very fringy in this case). Smaller spots on other leaves could be nascent blackspot (not sure). The rose must be very susceptible, so if you decide to keep it, you will need to spray with a very effective fungicide beginning with leaf-out in spring. The black lumps are puzzling. From a distance, it looks like some type of gall, but the angular, horned look is weird. If the texture is woody, I'd say it is a gall. Sometimes these have larval insects inside. I would prune below these. What do others think? The rotting brown sprouts probably emerged in winter and were frozen.

Thanks, Ron. I have actually continued looking around to see if I can find anything that closely resembles my rose and I have found one. I brought in a bloom to work from it instead of from the picture I'd taken and happened to notice something about my rose. It has a white ring around the stamen (really the bottom of the petals) and a dribble down one (or two) of the petals. You can see it in the picture I took but I hadn't really paid attention to it. I also wasn't sure that all of my blooms would have the same marking, as I only had one bloom when I posted the picture. Now I have a few more and they are all having that same white dribble. So, I'm thinking it might be a Parkdirektor Riggers. It seems to have the right petal count, size, shape, color and it has that white dribble. But, I'm not an expert. I want to know what you all think. Is there anything specific that might help me know if this is my rose or decisively know if it's not? Take Paul's and Sheila's advice to heart -- they are in your area, so if something was lousy for them it'll probably be the same for you. Here, on the other hand, 'Souvenir du Dr. Jamain' doesn't seem to get any fungal diseases, despite being grown without fungicides in central NJ. This may be because I have mine growing as a short climber against a raised deck railing, so the air circulation is great. The problem here is that his blooms crisp in a day or two if they get hit with midday sun. Where I planted him was shaded at that time of day, but then that half of the tree providing it died. So until 'Baltimore Belle' fills in a bit more, his flowers are very short-lived. But this year is turning out better than last, if only because it's been so overcast and wet and cool lately. I guess that's kinda what "normal" is for the PNW. I'm also waiting for mine to "get its feet" and start generating more canes, so I don't do any pruning for repeat-bloom. As a result, there's just a handful that appear in late Summer or early Autumn. When there's enough of him that I'd feel OK giving a Summer prune, then I'll find out how strong his repeat can really be. :-) ~Christopher

Thank you. Altissimo looks just like what I am looking for. It looks absolutley beautiful. And I found it at Chamblees, for good price. I think it will work out great!

You might like the OGR Climbing HT (or Cl Tea, according to smoe authorities) Noella Nabonnand. It should do well in your area. It has charming flowers, and rapid rebloom. It also has flexible canes which should be easy to train. I was not able to discern much fragrance. It is now available on the $7.50 list at Vintage. Nowhere else can you beat that price!

If you are going to train Altissimo, do it while the canes are still young and pliable. It thickens and become stiff rather quickly. Lovely rose (and I don't usually like reds).

Altissimo is a great rose. Mine grows completely unsupported. I certainly woudn't want to try to train it as it is very, very stiff and thorny. It guards my back door like a soldier. It is very healthy and happy in its hot, dry spot.

I'd like another red climber, and am considering Quadra. I've read good things about it on this forum. The flowers have a full, old-fashioned shape.

Altissimo is nice, but so is Too Hot to Handle, available from Heirloom Roses. Here is a picture of one spray.

Two others to consider are Berlin and Dortman. Dortman rambles a lot while my Berlin grows 7-9 feet in my yard with tall flexable cans that seem to like staying mannerly.
Altissimo makes a great stand alone pillar due to it's thick canes. Berlin has good repeat.

I'm going to be the lone dissenter, because I dislike 'Altissimo' intensely. Its a large, stiff rose that is far too much plant and far too little bloom. It also gets Blackspot like no tomorrow. Its hard to train to make it look good, IMO. I much prefer 'Dortmund', which is a nicer rose and much more easily trained, or 'Too Hot To Handle' pictured above.

Thanks for all of your wonderful suggestions. I'm thinking that Altissimo wouldn't work that good for me. It has lovely flowers but the fact that it is so thorny and stiff and not so easily trainable (and also that Paul says that it is sparse with flowering) makes me think that Dortmund may be best. I also like Noella Nabonnand. Hmmm... I really appreciate the wonderful suggestions. I think that I may be able to obtain Dortmund locally, too, just have to wait till they start selling potted roses in May!
